국문 초록

본고는 정조대 館閣文人으로 정조의 문체반정을 주도한 핵심인물인 극원 이만수의 화도시를 연구하여 그의 의식세계를 알아보고, 그 의미를 파악하는 것을 목적으로 한다. 그의 화도시는 유배생활에 대한 기록이라 할 수 있으며, 그 시에는 慕道의 자세ㆍ유배지에서의 所懷ㆍ聖恩과 樂歲에 대한 감흥 등이 나타나 있다. 모도의 자세에서는 성현의 도를 실천하며 면학하고자 하는 의지를 나타내었으며, 유배지에서의 소회에서는 자연 속에서의 은일과 자적을 통하여 자신을 성찰하고 심신의 안정을 찾아가는 모습을 나타내었다. 그리고 성은과 낙세에 대한 감흥에서는 성은에 대한 감사와 낙세에 대한 염원을 나타내었다. 또한 여기서 더 나아가 조선의 世德을 기리며 조선에 대한 자부심을 나타내기도 하고, 「東京懷古」 20수를 지어 신라에 대한 정통성을 부여하고 그 의미를 평가하기도 하였는데, 이는 신라를 이은 조선의 역사에 대한 정통성 부여의 의미를 지니는 것이기도 하다. 극원의 화도시는 우리나라의 작가들 중 도연명의 시 전체를 화운하였다는 점에서 의미를 지니며, 현실의 불우를 해소해가는 과정에서 나온 것이기는 하지만 자괴감에 빠지기 보다는 그것을 극복해가는 과정을 나타내었고, 조선의 역사에 대한 자부심을 나타내었다. 조선이 세도정치시기에 접어들면서 점차적으로 사회적 병폐들이 점철되어 말로를 걷게 되는데, 극원의 화도시는 이 시기 유학자의 의식세계를 읽을 수 있는 작품의 의미를 지닌다. 또한 나라에 대한 자부심과 역사적 정통성을 고양하는 이러한 작품을 유배지에서 지었다는 점에서도 상당한 의미를 지닌다.

영문 초록

Lee Man-su's Hwado poetry offers his records for his exile life. His poems reflect his attitude of pursuing truth, his impressions in the place of exile, and his sentiment for royal favor and abundant and peaceful year. As for his attitude of pursuing truth, he demonstrated his determination to practice the truth of sages and pursue knowledge. As for his impressions in the place of exile, he reflected upon himself and regained physical and mental stability through reclusiveness and self-contentment in nature. As for his sentiment for royal favor and abundant and peaceful year, he showed his gratitude for royal favor and wishes for abundant and peaceful years. In addition, he displayed his pride in Joseon, commemorating its virtues over the generations. He also wrote 20 poems of Donggyeonghoigo, granted legitimacy to Shilla, and assessed its meanings, which reflects his attempt to grant legitimacy to the history of Joseon succeeding Shilla. His Hwado poetry is significant in that he was the nation's only author to answer the entire poetry of Tao Yenming. He wrote the poetry in the process of overcoming his misfortune in reality, but the poetry describes his process of overcoming his shame rather than falling into it and his pride in the history of Joseon. Entering the period of royal in-law government, Joseon was facing its final days with the gradual accumulation of evil practices. His poetry opens a window to the conscious world of Confucian scholars during the period. It is also very significant that he wrote the work further highlighting pride in the nation and its historical legitimacy in the place of exile.
