Zenobia's Disillusionment: Hawthorne's Tragic Vision in The Blithedale Romance

국문 초록

페미니즘과 여성성은 지나치게 구사하면 경직되어 못마땅한 것이 되고 만다. 왜냐하면 이 두 주장은 똑같이 여성의 전체적인 잠재력을 실제로 경시하기 때문이다. 『블라이드데일 로맨스』에서 호손은 이 두 가지 입장이 각각 중대한 결함을 갖고 있다고 보고 그 둘을 모두 비난한다. 이 로맨스소설은 억지춘향 격의 도덕적 교훈에도 불구하고 특별히 여주인공 제노비아의 과감하고 자유로운 성격창조 때문에 호손의 작품 가운데 단연 돋보인다. 성적으로 성숙하고 지적으로 대담한 여성인 제노비아는 자연과 자아의 창조적 에너지를 대변한다. 적합하게 형성된 개성을 소유한 유일한 작중인물인 제노비아가 끝내 자살을 감행하는 것은 이 소설이 갖는 비통함을 잘 나타내준다. 블라이드데일 이야기의 종말은 제노비아의 죽음 주위를 맴돈다. 스토리텔러인 커버데일은 우리에게 제노비아를 버림받은 여인의 전형으로 보게 하여 그녀에 관한 보다 기본적인 진실을 놓치게 한다. 그렇지만 실제로 제노비아가 자살을 한 것은 단순히 마음의 상처를 받아서만은 아니다. 오히려 자신의 페미니즘 신조에 반하는 행동을 그녀 스스로 조장해옴으로써 자기 자신에 대한 증오심이 생겨났기 때문이다. 결국 제노비아가 호손의 동정심을 끌고 진정한 비극적 여주인공의 자리를 차지하는 것은 명약관화한 일이다.

영문 초록

Feminism and femininity, if in excess, are unsatisfactory in their rigidity, since both positions similarly ignore the total actuality of potential of women. In The Blithedale Romance, Hawthorne condemns both models, recognizing that each has grave deficiencies. Despite its mechanically enforced moral lessons, this romancenovel stands out among Hawthorne's works particularly for its bold and free characterization of Zenobia. An abundantly sexual and intellectually daring woman, Zenobia represents the creative energy of both nature and the self. It is a measure of the bitterness of this novel that Zenobia, the only character who possesses an adequately established identity commits suicide. The end of the Blithedale tale revolves completely around the death of Zenobia. Coverdale, the storyteller would have us view Zenobia as a typically jilted woman and miss a more fundamental truth about her. Yet in actuality, Zenobia drowns herself not simply from a broken heart but due to her hatred toward herself, just because she has acted against her own feminist beliefs. After all, it is obvious that Zenobia attracts Hawthorne's sympathies, and approaches the status of a true tragic heroine.
