『天倪錄』 소재 기이담의 양상과 의미

국문 초록

이 논문은 초기 야담집인 『천예록』의 기이담의 양상과 의미를 알아보는 것을 목적으로 작성되었다. 『천예록』은 총 62화 중 47화가 기이한 이야기를 다루고 있으며, 이때 기이담은 전란과 재해, 전염병 등으로 혼란스러웠던 현실에 대한 알레고리적 성격을 지닌다. 이들 기이담의 당대 사회적 의미는 크게 세 가지로 나누어 볼 수 있다. 첫째, 공포와 두려움의 대상이 귀신이나 요괴로 가시화된 경우이다. 이야기기 대기근과 함께 17세기 조선을 덮친 전염병의 모습, 미지의 존재에 대한 보다 근본적인 공포를 표상한 것이다. 둘째, 소망의 환상적 실현을 통해 현실 모순에 대한 비판의 기능을 하는 경우이다. 전쟁과 재해로 인해 피폐해진 백성의 삶은 기이담 속에서 이인에 의한 구출과 같은 환상적인 해결책을 꿈꾸었다. 이는 겉으로는 소망이 실현되고 문제가 해결되는 것처럼 보이지만, 그것들이 현실적 대안 없이 이야기 안에서 환상적으로 이루어지고 있을 뿐이라는 점에서 문제적이다. 셋째, 유가적 가치관을 표상하는 조상혼령담의 경우이다. 예교의 발달에 따라 제사의 중요성이 크세 인식되었고, 이것이 전대에 비해 조상혼령담의 비중이 증가한 이유이다. 한편 『천예록』에는 조상혼령이 낮에 나타난다거나, 욕망을 지닌 존재로 변모하는 이야기도 등장하는데, 이는 예법을 지탱하는 구조에 생겨난 혼란상을 암시한다.

영문 초록

This paper has been written to look into the aspect and meaning of the strange stories from ‘Cheonyerok’. 47 stories among the total 62 from ‘Cheonyerok’ handles strange stories which show an allegorical characteristic to the contradiction of the chaotic reality from war, disasters and contagious disease. The social meaning of the time of these strange stories can be largely divided into three categories. First, the subject of fear and horror has been visualized to ghost or monsters. The story symbolized the more fundamental fear towards the unknown, contagious disease that swept the 17th-century Chosen along with the great famine. Secondly, criticized the contradiction of reality through fulfilling hope with a fantasy touch. The plights of war and disaster made the people dream of a fantastic resolution such as being rescued by a righteous person in the stories. On the surface, it may seem like the hopes being fulfilled and the problems being solved. However, it is a problem where it remains only a fantasy in the stories and no practical alternative. Third, stories about the spirits of ancestors which show the values of Confucianism. The spread of Confucianism brought people to be highly aware of the importance of ancestral rites which brought along the increase of stories about the spirits of ancestors. Meanwhile, stories where spirits of ancestors appearing during day time or turning into beings with desire can be found in ‘Cheonyerok’, which implies the confusion that came up in the structure that supports Confucianism.
