전업주부의 배움의 방식과 주체형성

국문 초록

본 연구는 주민의 공동 관심사인 지역 아이들의 보육 및 교육의 문제를 해결하기 위해 마을의 작은도서관운동에 참여하는 전업주부들의 학습활동과 주체형성(empowerment)의 과정을 분석하였다. 마을도서관운동에서 ‘자원활동가’라고 불리우는 주부들은 자신들의 생활 과제에 관여하는 과정으로 지역 활동에 참여하는 특징을 보인다. 이들은 자녀교육 중심의 사적 요구에서 출발해 점차 지역에 관심을 보이기 시작한다. 더 나아가 지역의 공동 과제를 해결하기 위해 지역사회에 참여하면서 사회적 관계도 확장되게 되는데 이들은 이러한 과정 속에서 주체형성의 과정을 경험한다. 이 연구에서는 대전지역마을어린이도서관 운동의 모델이라 할 수 있는 두 마을도서관을 연구 대상으로 선정하여 여기서 활동하는 전업주부들의 주체형성 과정을 분석하였다. 두 마을도서관의 활동가인 전업주부들은 활동의 결과, 개인과 조직의 역량이 개발되고 지역의 일상적 학습문화와 교육공동체 형성의 기반이 조성되는 공통점을 보이고 있다. 반면에 각각 마을도서관의 활동가들은 마을의 특성인 신도시ㆍ중산층지역과 구도심ㆍ저소득층이라는 지역적 계층성을 공유하고 있었다. 두 지역의 주체형성적 특성을 비교하면, 중산층 지역에서는 자기만족적 실천 이상으로 확대되지 못하는 소시민적 주체형성의 한계가 보이며, 저소득층 지역은 사회적 네트워크로 축적되지 못하고 생계형 경제 활동으로 전이되는 경향을 보이고 있었다. 전업주부들의 사회 참여 과정에서 나타나는 주체형성 과정은 상호 대비되는 두 마을에서 볼 수 있듯이 지역에 기반한 사회계층적 문화에 영향을 받으면서 지역적 가능성과 한계를 보이고 있음을 확인할 수 있었다.

영문 초록

The purpose of this study is to analyze the learning activities and empowerment process of housewives who participate in ‘small library movement’ based on their community unit for their children fostering and education in neighborhood(the common issues of residents). Housewives who are called as ‘volunteer activists’ at community library have the feature of the third feminism stream in such that they participate to community activities involved in their daily tasks. They start from individual demands ,the education of their children, and then gradually participate to community for resolving common tasks in their neighborhood, and experience the process of empowerment within the extension of social relationship. In this study, two community libraries for children, advanced model of community library movement, in Daejeon is researched and are analyzed the process of empowerment of activists. Housewives who are acting at two town libraries share regional hierarchy of new urban middle class neighborhood and old downtown/low income class neighborhood. As a result of activities for community library, the abilities of individuals and organization are developed and the base for local daily learning culture and the formation of education community is organized. But, in the middle class neighborhood, the limit of petitbourgeois empowerment which cannot be extended beyond self-satisfactory practices is shown and in the low income class neighborhood, the limit of not being accumulated into social network and of breaking away to livelihood type economic activities is shown. Such empowerment indicated in the process of participating to society by housewives, the subjects of movement of two community libraries, is impacted by socio-hierarchical culture of each region and it shows unique possibilities and limitation for each region.
