〈옥루몽〉에 나타난 군담의 성격과 병자호란의 서사적 변형

국문 초록

본 논문에서는 병자호란과 〈옥루몽〉의 관련 양상 및 그 서사적 변형에 대해 논의하였다. 〈옥루몽〉은 명나라를 배경으로 양창곡이라는 인물의 영웅성과 그 영웅성을 확인하기 위한 군담, 정치적 갈등, 여성 인물과의 결연, 가문의 현창 등이 다채롭게 펼쳐진 작품이다. 이 과정에서 명나라는 정치적, 외교적으로 매우 안정된 상태를 유지하며 전쟁에서 항상 승리한다. 다만 양창곡이 귀양을 가느라 부재하게 되면서, 북선우가 명나라를 침입하게 된다. 이 과정에서 조정의 분열과 무능, 천자의 고립과 천자 가족의 이산이 매우 구체적으로 전개된다. 이러한 면들은 〈옥루몽〉의 배경인 명나라의 역사에서보다는 병자호란에서 유사한 점들을 찾아볼 수 있다. 이로 인해 〈옥루몽〉은 병자호란을 직접 배경으로 하였던 실기류나 군담 및 영웅소설 등과 달리 시대와 지역을 바꾸어 가며, 패배한 전쟁을 승리의 과정으로 형상화하였다는 특징을 지닌다. 그리고 이러한 내용에는 전쟁을 제대로 준비하지 못한 조정의 대신들과 인재를 알아보지 못하는 임금에 대한 비판이 내재되어 있다. 따라서 〈옥루몽〉에 나타난 병자호란은 비록 역사적 사건을 서사적으로 변형한 것이긴 하지만, 후대에 병자호란을 기억하던 방식의 하나라는 점에서 의미를 지닌다.

영문 초록

The purpose of this study was to examine the aspects of Byungja- horan and Okroomong and a narrative about the former. Okroomong is a literary work that described a wide variety of things involving a hero Yang Chang-gok, his war stories, political conflicts, relationships with female characters and his family during the Myung Dynasty of China. The Myung Dynasty won every war that it waged thanks to its political stability and diplomatic relationship. When Yang Chang-gok was absent, however, the nation come to a crisis because of Book Seon-soo, and then the government’s disunion and incompetency, the emperor’s isolation and his family’s separation were portrayed in detail. Historically, those incidents were similar to what happened during Byungjahoran rather than what happened in the history of the Myung Dynasty that was the very backdrop of this work. So one of the major characteristics of Okroomong is that unlike war stories or novels of heroes related to Byungjahoran, it depicted the characters as ones who won the war that symbolized Byungjahoran, though our country actually lost it. And this work implicitly criticized the ministers who didn’t prepare for the war, and also criticized the king who couldn’t recognize talented people. This work is of significance in that although it is just a narrative about the historical incident Byungjahoran, it recalled that war to the next generations’ mind in a new way.
