메타 서술 상황의 제시를 위한 장문(長文) 실험

국문 초록

본 논문은 박태원의 〈방란장 주인〉(1936)에서 나타나는 문체적 특징이 작가의 모더니스트로서의 감각과 맞물리는 지점과 그 의미를 밝히고, 1936년을 기점으로 모더니즘적 글쓰기에서 리얼리즘적 글쓰기로 변모했다고 평가하는 기존 연구의 시기별 구분에 대하여 재고하고자 하였다. 장문(長文) 실험의 대표작으로 꼽히는 〈방란장 주인〉에 나타나는 다양한 문체적 특징은 상황 외부에 위치한 서술자의 서술 과정을 환기하는 지표이며, 나아가 서술 상황과 서술자의 존재가 동시에 드러나는 ‘메타 서술’의 작가 의식을 드러내는 장치이기도 하다. 그리고 이러한 메타서술의 ‘문체적’ 실험은 〈소설가 구보씨의 일일〉(1934)의 메타 서술적 플롯과 연속되는 작가의식을 보여주는 지점이다. 〈방란장 주인〉에서 두드러지게 나타나는 문체적 특징은 잦은 콤마 사용, 문어체적 어휘 사용, 접속 부사어와 주어의 표기를 통한 서술자의 위치 부각으로 정리할 수 있다. 콤마 사용의 용례는 크게 두 가지로, 첫째 인물의 인식, 즉 외부의 사물을 바라보고 발견하는 인물의 인식을 순차적으로 드러낼 때 이다. 둘째로 인물의 사고를 의미 단위별로 구분 지을 때 주로 사용된다. 콤마 사용을 통하여 절 단위가 분절됨으로써 서술 시간은 지연되고 독자는 인물의 사고 과정의 흐름에 좀더 주의를 집중하게 된다. 따라서 독자의 독서 과정은 인물의 사고와 행위를 직접적으로 접하는 과정임과 동시에 서술자가 인물의 인식과 행위를 분절하는 방식을 따라가는 과정이기도 하다. 또한 〈방란장 주인〉에서는 잦은 문어체적 어휘 사용을 통하여 서술자의 위치를 부각시키고 유머러스한 어조를 창출하고 있다. 〈방란장 주인〉에서 그려지는 에피소드는 인물 간의 뚜렷한 갈등 없이 매우 소소한 일상적인 것임에도 불구하고, 구어에서는 잘 사용되지 않는 ‘소위(所爲)’, ‘대소(大小)’, ‘옥호(屋號)’ 등의 한자어 삽입을 통하여 상황과 괴리되는 언어 사용을 보여주어 웃음을 유발한다. 〈방란장 주인〉의 에피소드의 소소함과 서술자가 가장하는 ‘점잖음’의 포즈 간의 괴리를 극대화하여 유머러스함이 발생하는 것이다. 또한 문어체적 상황에서 자주 사용되는 ‘그러하다’라는 지시어의 잦은 사용을 통하여 인물의 행위 및 발화를 모두 서술자의 발화로 수렴시키고 있어 서술자의 위치를 더욱 부각시키는 효과를 낳고 있다. 마지막으로 〈방란장 주인〉에서는 ‘문득’, ‘어쩌면’, ‘대체’ 등과 같은 접속 부사어의 사용이나 절 단위마다의 주어 표기를 통하여 인물의 사고와 서술자의 언급 사이의 구분을 뚜렷이 유지하고 있다. 〈방란장 주인〉의 절 단위는 인물의 사고, 서술자의 평가, 인물의 행위에 대한 서술 등의 의미 단위와 각각 대응되는데, 개별의미 단위의 전환의 지표가 되는 것이 접속 부사어의 사용이다. 또는 문법상의 부자연스러움에도 불구하고 주어를 문장 중간에 표기하여 사고나 행위 중인 인물의 모습을 외부로부터 서술하는 서술자의 위치를 부각시키기도 한다. 이처럼 상황을 전환시키는 접속 부사어의 사용과 문장 중간 주어 표기를 통해서 외부에서 상황을 서술하는 서술자와 상황 내부의 등장인물 간의 거리가 더욱 뚜렷해진다. 이처럼 〈방란장 주인〉의 장문에는 잦은 콤마 사용, 문어체적 어휘의 사용, 접속 부사어와 문장 중간 주어 표기 등 다양한 문체적 특징이 포함되어 있다. 그리고 이러한 특질은 서사 상황 외부에 위치하는 서술자의 위치를 부각시킴과 동시에서술자가 서술을 행해 나가는 과정을 환기하는 메타 서술 실험의 일환이라 볼 수 있다. 이러한 특징으로 볼 때 〈방란장 주인〉의 문체 실험은 〈소설가 구보씨의 일일〉에서 나타나는 메타 서술적 플롯 제시라는 작가의식과 연속되는 지점에 위치한 것이라 해석할 수 있다.

영문 초록

This article aims to investigate Park Tae-won’s literary style which shows the characteristics of modernist author prominently and to reconsider the validity of standards dividing Park’s literary world. 〈The host of Bangnanjang〉 considered as one of the major works showing ‘A Length-extended sentence’ suggests various literary styles. And that kind of writing styles reminds readers of a narrator’s role in the work continuously as the narrative goes on. It’s a kind of meta-narrative technique, which constitute important feature of 〈One day of a novelist Gubo〉 as a different version. The former shows meta-narrative features in a level of literary style, whereas the latter, plot structure. There are three major characteristics of writing style in 〈The host of Bangnanjang〉 :　using many commas, words of written styles, conjunctives and insertion of subjects in each sentences. I discuss the case of using commas in chapter 2. There are two cases of using commas in the work. First, commas are suggested in case of representing character’s cognition, understanding of external world. Secondly, commas are frequently used when narrator articulates the flow of character’s thought as a semantic level. The time of narrative is delayed and readers are likely to pay attention to the flow of character’s consciousness by every articulated phrase marked with commas. Thus, reading process means not only understanding character’s consciousness directly but also following narrator’s role articulating the flow as semantic phrases. Also, both making humorous tone of voices and emphasis on narrator’s role are achieved by using words of written styles frequently. In chapter 3, the lexical categories of written style are investigated. Although episodes in 〈The host of Bangnanjang〉 are ordinary and even trivial things, without obvious conflict among characters, the tone describing the narrative situation is quite polite and formal. It is possible to use many written style words, especially Sino-korean words. The difference between the pettiness of narrative situation and excessively polite tone create humorous effects. Dexis such as ‘that’ are often used in sentences, which frequently used in written style. Characters’ words and actions is converged into narrator’s remark by using dexis like ‘that’, so narrator’s location is more magnified. Finally, narrator’s remark emerged by using of conjunctive adjectives such as ‘suddenly’, ‘perhaps’, ‘ever’ and marking subjects in each sentence. In chapter 4, this matter is discussed. The phrases articulated by commas have a variety of narrative qualifications such as character’s consciousness, actions and narrator’s statements to characters. Conjunctive adjectives are often used when one narrative qualification changes into another one. Marking subject in each sentence makes an effect of emphasizing ti arrator’s location and role describing narrative situation outside. By using these kinds of narrative devices, the stance between characters and narrators is surely formed. In conclusion, various characteristics of writing styles are represented such as using commas, choice of words in written style lexcial categories, using conjunctive adjectives and inserting subjects in the middle of the sentence. All of these writing styles help to emphasize narrator’s location and role, and meta-narrative showing narrator’s narrative process directly. This feature is similar to the major characteristic of Park’s another work, 〈One day of novelist Gubo〉 in 1934. While 〈One day of novelist Gubo〉 shows meta-narrative in a level of plot, 〈The host of Bangnanjang〉 represents in in a level of writing styles.
