영문 초록

Located in Mt. Jiri, Gurye-gun, Jeollanam Province, the Hwaeom Buddhist Temple is one of the foremost Buddhist temples in Korea. Among its many stone relics from the United Shilla period, the three-story stone pagoda with four lion statutes is well known for its unique style. There is a lion statue at each of the four corners of the upper stylobate with the Buddhist image sitting in the middle and the four lions supporting the pagoda body. Although those aspects make the pagoda unique in style, its basic form follows a general stone pagoda style during the Shilla period with three-story body on top of the two-tier stylobate and an ornamental top on the finial. Examination results of the stone structures from the United Shilla period remaining in the Hwaeom Buddhist Temple reveal that most of them were built in the 9th century or later. The backgrounds of the stone pagoda's construction were investigated in diverse aspects including the history of Buddhism, economy, doctrine, and culture. In Honam, the influences of the Zen Buddhist temples seem to have stimulated the growth of Buddhist arts in the 9th century. It's likely that the four lion statues around the upper stylobate of the three-story stone pagoda with four lion statutes represent the Sajabinsinsammae in Ipbeopgyepumof the Avatamska Sutra. The stone structures built in large quantities in Honam didn't just suddenly appear in the 9th century but were the expression of the region's cultural capacity. The three-story stone pagoda with four lion statutes is considered to have been built in such a cultural background.
