Coming to late Unified Silla period, Buddhist sculpture was created focusing on local area. For even in the Goryeo period, this tendency kept going on. In Goryeo period Buddhist sculpture appeared local and distinctive features. So it is essential to survey Buddhist sculptures located in local area in order to understand locality of Buddhist sculpture in Goryeo period. It is difficult to grasp production period of Buddhist sculpture, nevertheless, through the analysis of iconography, style, historical background, one can understand the locality of Buddhist sculpture in Goryeo period. As part of such works, I attempt to research stone Maitreya statue in Zeungpyeong area. Zeungpyeong province is the central area of Chungcheongbukdo. There are many stone Buddha in this area such as stone Buddha of Gwangdeoksa temple, a Buddha carved on a cliff at Namhari temple site, stone Bodhisattva at Miamri temple site, and stone Bodhisattva at Yulgokri. Of all these statues stone bodhisattva at Miamri temple site and stone bodhisattva at Namhari put on cylindrical crown and seized lotus bough by hand. This study researched iconography of these statues and production period through the analysis of style. The iconography of these two statues has been identified as the Maitreya on the basis of Maitreya statue of Gamsansa, Buddhist painting of Goryeo period, and bodhisattva of China. There are two types of Maitreya iconography in Goryeo period. First iconography consists of nirmana buddha in crown and lotus branch. Second is only lotus bud without nirmana buddha in crown. These two iconography have something to do with stone Bodhisattva at Miamri temple and Namhari. Researchers have regarded stone bodhisattva of Goryeo Maitreya or Avalokitesvara over the past year. However, considering iconography of stone Bodhisattva at Miamri temple and Namhari, Maitreya will be more found. The date of stone bodhisattva at Miamri temple site is presumed 11th century through comparing with figure made clear in 11th century. Stone bodhisattva at Namhari is close to figure of Mireukdaewon in style. Bodhisattva of Miamri seems to relate to Won( ) that was 院 accommodation located at transportation hub. That of Namhari has something to do with a series of historical fact such as management of So, local system reform, and dispatching local officials. Considering this situation, that of Miamri is presumed to be made after 1108. These two statues are closely related to basic desire of Goryeo period people such as protection, material prosperity, and unity.
