‘근대적’ 쾰른카니발의 탄생과 지역 정체성 형성과정

국문 초록

정체성에 대한 분석은 특정 정체성에 근거한다는 것이 무엇을 의미하는지를 밝히는 것이 되어야 한다. 즉 정체성이 사회적 구성물이라는 점을 인정하고, ‘특정 정체성이 무엇 때문에, 누구에 의해, 어떤 시점과 상황에서 생성되고 유지되 고 재검토되는지’를 설명하는 것이 가장 핵심적인 문제가 되어야 한다. 이와 같은 맥락에서 본 글은 독일의 근대 통일국가 형성기에 쾰른의 일부 시민들이 어떻게 그리고 왜 카니발을 전략적으로 호출하였으며, 그 내용과 맥락이 지역 정체성 형성과 어떻게 관련되어 있는지에 대해 살펴본다. 두 개의 서로 상이한 정체성을 가진 문화들이 만날 경우 이 둘 사이에는 정치적, 경제적, 사회적 그리고 군사적인 불평등 관계가 성립한다. 특히 한 문화가 다른 문화를 직접적으로 지배하고 통치하는 경우 상대적으로 열세에 처한 문화는 이 불평등한 관계를 개선하기 위해 다양한 방안들을 모색한다. 이 방안들은 각 문화들마다 그리고 시기적으로 상이하게 나타나는데, 많은 경우 자신들의 문화적 전통을 다시 호명하고 이를 통해 자신들의 정체성을 다시 확인하고 강화하는 방법들이 주로 사용된다. 프로이센 통치가 시작되면서 쾰른 시민들은 커다란 문화적 차이와 정치적, 경제적 불평등을 경험했다. 로마제국 당시에 태어난 쾰른은 2000년의 역사를 가진 독일에서 가장 오래된 도시들 중의 하나였으며, 로마문화의 혜택을 가장 많이 받은 도시였으며, 이에 대해 긍지를 느끼고 있었으며, 이탈리아와 가톨릭에 대한 유대도 강했다. 또한 이 영향으로 인해 쾰른은 중세 후기까지도 정치적, 경제적 그리고 종교적 면에서 독일제국 내에서 가장 선진화된 자유제국도시였다. 하지만 프로이센의 통치는 이런 쾰른의 역사와 전통이 경시되었고, 일방적으로 추진되었다. 라인지방의 중심도시로 다시 우뚝 서고 싶었던 쾰른 시민의 욕구는 무시되었을 뿐 만 아니라 오히려 라인지방의 변방도시로 전락하였다. 자유제국도시와 프랑스대혁명 동안 경험한 자유와 평등에 대한 기대도 프로이센의 엄격한 통제 정책에 의해 억압당했다. 이와 같은 요인들로 인해 쾰른 지역유지들이 근대적 카니발을 재조직하게 되었다.쾰른 유지들로 구성된 축제질서위원회는 카니발을 통해 프로이센과는 다른 자신들만의 문화적 전통을 현재 속으로 다시 불러내서 지역적 정체성을 만들고, 이를 통해 지역민들을 도덕적으로 계몽하고 이들을 하나로 묶고자 했다. 또한 쾰른카니발은 프로이센 통치자에게 자신들의 역사와 전통을 과시하고, 자신들의 자존감을 보여주고자 했던 축제였다. 이를 위해 근대적 카니발은 당시 선진적인 이성과 합리성 그리고 규율에 따라 재구성되었다. 자신들의 화려했던 다양한 전통들이 호명되었을 뿐 만 아니라 프로이센에 대항하는 카니발영웅이나 콜로니아 그리고 쾰른농부와 같은 인물들이 새로 만들어졌다. 이 인물들은 프로이센 문화와는 다른 쾰른의 변별적인 역사와 전통을 현시적으로 보여줄 뿐 만 아니라, 자신들의 사회가 나아가야할 지향점을 제시하는 역할도 하고 있다. 카니발의 핵인 가면행렬은 이런 내용들이 가장 잘 드러나는 행사이다.

영문 초록

With the start of Preussen Government, the Cologne citizens experienced the great cultural differences and the social and financial inequalities. Born during the period of Roman Empire, Cologne was one of the oldest cities in Germany holding the history of 2000 years as the city to have gained the greatest benefits of the Roman culture and had felt the pride and dignity in accordance with strong relations with Italy and Catholics. Moreover, due to this influence, Cologne was the most advanced free city in the German Empire within the political, financial and religious aspects until the late medieval times. However, the reign of Preussen neglected the history and traditions of Cologne and was promoted unilaterally. The desires of the Cologne citizens that aspired to stand tall once more as the central city of the Rhein district was not only ignored and rather promoted as the remote city of the Rhein district. Furthermore, the anticipations on the freedom and equality experienced during the free city and French Revolution was oppressed by the strict controlling policies of Preussen and with such factors, the Cologne region preservations were able to reorganize the modernistic carnivals. The festival order committee composed of the Cologne retentions built the regional identity by recalling their cultural traditions into the present day unlike the Preussen through the carnival and through this process, the district residents enlightened by morals and attempted to tie them into one. Moreover, the Cologne Carnival displayed their history and traditions to the Preussen rulers and had been the festival to display their own sense of self-respect. For this process, the modern carnival was reconstruct according to the advanced reasoning, rationality and the regulations. Not only were their various and brilliant traditions announced but the characters such as the Carnival Hero, Colonia and Cologne Farmer that opposed against the Preussen were newly created. Such characters are not only displaying the distinguished history and traditions of Cologne that were different from the Preussen cultures but also playing the role of indicating the directions points for their society to move. Moreover, the mask parade that is the kernel of the carnival is the event that best displays such contents. The method of Preussen that governed Cologne changes in amity during the mid 19th century when the industrialization of Germany was actively progressed and at this time, the constitution of the mask parade from the Cologne Carnival changes in the amicable direction towards Preussen as well.
