국문 초록

이 글은 문화를 이해하는 도구로서의 ‘문화지도’에 관한 것이다. 미디어의 발달에 의해 세계는 하나의 촌락, 즉 지구촌으로 좁혀지고 있다. 타문화에 대한 관심이 높아지고, 그에 대한 이해가 요구되고 있다. 이때 지도는 문화를 총체적으로,가시적으로 볼 수 있는 하나의 인터페이스가 될 수 있다. 넓은 의미에서 문화는 시-공간에서 일어나는 인간의 활동이라 정의한다면 시-공간을 표현할 수 있는 매체는 문화를 효과적으로 담아낼 수 있는 도구가 될 수 있다. 지도는 정보를 시각적으로 표현하여 다른 사람들과 공유하고 전달할 수 있게 해주는 특징을 가지고 있다. 또한 선택적으로, 지리적 공간에서의 현상 재현해주며, 대상과 대상 혹은 사회와의 관계를 규정해 줌으로써 상호관계성을 파악할 수 있도록 해준다. 인간은 지도를 통해 세상을 한 눈에 볼 수 있게 되었다. 그렇기에 지도는 현실 그대로의 모사라기보다, 인간이 ‘세상을 전체적으로’ 인식할 수 있는 추상화된 표현 도구이기도하다. 지도는 인간의 필요에 의해 그 기능이 확장되어 왔다. 지도의 역사를 보면 처음에는 단순히 위치를 정확하게 표시하는 그림이었지만 점차 다양한 정보를 가시적으로 표현하는 매체로 확장 된다. 오늘날의 지도는 항공사진과 지리정보체계등의 발달로 실제 지구상의 지리적 윤곽을 완벽하게 표현해주고 있다. 이제 지도는 우리에게 지형 그 자체보다 그 위에서 일어나는 다양한 문화 정보를 담아내는 매체가 되고 있다. 이 ‘지도’라는 매체에 문화를 표현한 것을 우리는 ‘문화지도’라고 부르고자 한다. 문화지도는 단순한 지형도가 아니라 인간 삶의 총체적인 결과물을 표현해주어야 하기 때문에 시간과 문화적 기호들을 효과적으로 표현해줄 필요가 있다. 이글에서는 지도상에 표현되는 이러한 공간과 시간, 기호가 문화를 표현하는데 있어 서의 가능성과 한계를 여러 사례를 통해 살펴보았다.

영문 초록

This article is about ‘Cultural atlas’ for understanding of culture. Developing and using new medias, members of various human communities increase interests on different cultures of other country. In this time, ‘Atlas’ can be an useful tool of cultural studies. Because we can express all human things and events of time and space with broad definition in atlas. This means cultural atlas is an effective tool of understanding culture. The function of atlas has been developed with the needs. The first time, atlas played a role of location indicator and this reflected viewpoint for the world. In the beginning of exploring period, the importance of exact location have been emphasized. But after 19centuries atlas became from a picture of geographical locator to the field for showing various themes. With the support of aerial photo technology, remote sensing, geographical information system(GIS), and other technical development, atlas perfectly copy the real of the earth on the topographical survey. Now it's matter how to use this real atlas. Culture is proper item of using the atlas, which can cover and express all human activities on the basis of time and space. We call it ‘Cultural atlas’ as expression of culture through the media of atlas. Cultural atlas can express various cultures with points, lines and surfaces on the basic axles of time and space. Usually points represent fixed location of cultures, lines represents moving direction of culture or cultural section, surface represents cultural distribution. These each components could be concretely presented using various graphic factors and become very effective method to deliver visual message and meaning. The example of various museums in Japan shows good utilizing of cultural atlas as a kind of exhibition tool.
