영화 <300>에 나타난 서구중심주의

국문 초록

2007년 3월, 한국에서 개봉된 할리우드 영화 <300>은 관객동원 만큼이나 적지 않은 사회적 논란을 일으켰다. 논란의 배경은 ‘동양 문화에 대한 몰염치인가, 영화라는 창작적 허구에 대한 몰이해인가’의 대립구도에서 비롯되었다. 이란에서 는 이 영화가 그들의 선조인 페르시아인을 모독하고 역사적 사실을 왜곡했다는 이유로 상영이 금지되기도 하였다. 영화의 원작자 프랭크 밀러와 영화감독 잭 스나이더는 영화가 역사를 왜곡했다는 비난에 대해 ‘소재만 빌려왔을 뿐 역사를 다룬 것이 아니었다’고 항변하지만, 영화가 하나의 예술영역을 넘어서 사회 전반에 미치는 영향력이 크다는 점에서 그리스와 페르시아를 선악의 이분법적 구도로 파악한 점에 대해서는 비판의 여지가 있다. 실제로 인터넷 포털 사이트 ‘네이버’에 나타난 영화 <300>을 감상한 한국 관객들의 반응은 대체로 두 가지로 나뉜다. 첫째, 영화는 영화일 뿐, 거기에 역사적의미를 부여할 필요는 없다는 주장이다. 둘째, 비록 <300>이 오락영화이기는 하지만 그 안에 내포되어 있는 페르시아에 대한 부정적 이미지는 문제가 있다는 것이다. 영화 <300>이 아무리 만화를 원작으로 하고 있더라도 역사에 대한 사전지식이나 이해 없이 제시된 장면을 있는 그대로 받아들인다면, 관객의 의식 속에 는 자기도 모르는 사이에 서구중심적인 고장관념이 내재하게 된다.그러한 관점에서, 영화 <300>이 단순히 역사를 왜곡하고 있다는 차원을 넘어, 역사적 스테레오타입 분석방법을 적용시켜서 영화를 통해 드러내려는 원작자와 감독의 의도는 무엇인가, 그리고 그러한 의도에서 만들어진 영화가 관객들에게 심어줄 수 있는 이미지와 스테레오타입은 무엇인가에 대한 연구는 역사를 소재로하는 영화를 이해하는데 있어서 새로운 담론의 장을 열어 줄 수 있을 것이다.

영문 초록

March 2007, The hollywood movie <300> was released in Korea and There were a number of spectators. Although, the movie denounced enormous social denunciation. The background of denunciation divided widely opinions on points as follows: "the movie shows unsympathy about oriental culture or spectators have lack of understanding on the movie as invented fiction? In Iran, The movie was not able to put on the screen because it defamed the honor of persians, ancestor of Iranian. Frank Miller, the original author and Jack Schneider, the director of this film refute that they did not distorted historical accounts about Greco-Persian Wars, but they were helped by raw material from historical occurrence. Although, yet there is not the slightest excuse that they catched hold of dichotomy, namely, good and evil. Indeed, there are two point of views on the movie <300> in korean portal site, Naver. First, movie is only movie, in which there is no need to bestow historical meaning. Second, although the movie <300> is a film for amusement, in that one can find negative image on persians. Although the movie <300> was made of cartoon as original art, euro-central stereotype is immanent in consciousness of spectators, if spectators accept presented scene of movie without pre-knowledge or understanding about history. In this viewpoint, the research that is applied the analytic mothed of historical stereotype in the field of movie criticism could open on the new stage of conversation.
