영문 초록

The ceramic trends in Japan closely follow its history. During the Japanese Invasion of Korea (1592), many of the potters of the Joseon period were taken to Japan. It is during this time that the Joseon potters brought with them their fine porcelain techniques and skills. This began the ceramic culture in Japan as their works in clay surpassed the value in art in neighboring countries of Korea (Joseon) and China. Their strong cultural roots which included the tea ceremony and flower arrangement played a strong role in this development, but more importantly is the constant research into tradition and heritage. Another large contribution to Japanese ceramics can be placed in the 20th century when Japan opened its ceramic trade to the west. Thus introducing western aesthetics into eastern works, the two values were able to be juxtaposed, compared, and studied. During the Edo period many of the western techniques and materials were made available to Japan and began to set new standards and expectations. Through this thesis and in the research of contemporary ceramics in Japan and through the study of its history, one can pinpoint where and how the various trends came into existence. Meiji period borne the modern ceramic movement as some gravitated away from pottery and closer to ceramic art. As a result there was a boom in art exhibits in clay and ceramics as an art-form, such as ceramic sculpture, became more popular. As a result, during 1900-2000, the flourish of ceramic artists lead to the creation of many ceramic art groups, forums, associations, publications, etc. And it is for these reasons, the study and understanding of contemporary and modern ceramics in Japan is made possible.
