체코어의 언어순수주의에 관한 통시적 고찰

국문 초록

반-게르만 정서에 기초한 체코어의 언어순수주의의 역사는 이미 15세기부터 시작된 것이다. 체코어의 순수성을 지키고자 이미 오래전에 정착한 독일어 요소들의 사용을 억제하거나 신조어의 조어방식이 독일어와 동일하면 이를 제거하려 했던 급진적인 성향에 이르기까지 체코어의 언어순수주의는 체코어 표준어형성의 전 과정에 개입하였다. 이처럼 언어순수주의는 그 자체가 학제(學際) 간 연구의 관심을 끄는 사회언어학적 연구 대상임에 틀림없다. 그러나 19세기와 20세기 초 표준 문어체코어의 재건에 중요한 역할을 담당했던 체코어의 언어순수주의는 그동안 체코 언어학계의 주목을 받지 못 하여 왔다. 이는 일차적으로 서구 언어학계의 일반적인 연구풍토에서 기인하는 것으로, ‘언어순수주의는 훈련받지 못한 언어학자들이 자국의 언어에 대한 우월적 태도나 민족주의적 성향을 드러내는 저급한 연구 분야’로 터부(taboo) 시 되고 있다는 것이다. 두 번째 이유로는 ‘체코어의 언어순수주의는 표준체코어의 발달사에 부정적 영향만을 끼쳤다’라는 프라하학파의 화석화된 명제가 바로 그것이다. 그러나 오늘날 표준체코어가 그 기능과 지위적 측면에서 하위 언 어층위인 일상구어에 의해 위협을 받는 현실에 직면해 있음을 고려해 볼 때 그 발단이 된 언어순수주의에 대한 통시적 고찰이 필요하다 판단된다.

영문 초록

The history of Czech linguistic purism, based on Anti-Germanism, originated in the 15th century. As a conservative effort or activities to protect the purity of Czech language, it served to restrain the use of German loanwords which had taken root a long time prior, and even tried to eliminate coined words which were regarded as having been created on the basis of similar word formation in German. Overall, Czech purism intervened greatly in the overall process of the formation of Standard Czech. Linguistic purism is thus a relevant research topic for an interdisciplinary area such as sociolinguistics. The Czech purism that played a important role in rebuilding Written Standard Czech from 19th century to the beginning of 20th century did not attract the attention of either Czech linguists or the public. As is well known, the lack of interest in the Czech purism is caused by the scientific climate of Western linguists who generally deem purism taboo. They consider purism to be a research field used by untrained linguists to express their hidden national superiority over “impure” foreign elements. Another important reason is closely connected to the fossilized idea that Czech linguistic purism had a negative influence on the development of Standard Czech. However, considering the fact that Standard Czech is currently being confronted with a crisis of its proper function and status, the diachronic approach to the question at hand is deemed a timely and relevant subject for discussion.
