국문 초록

폴란드 현대문학을 대표하는 작가인 안제예프스키의 소설 <어둠이 땅을 덮는다>는 폴란드가 스탈린 시대를 마감하고 자유화시대를 맞이했을 때 발표된, 소위 청산문학에 속한다. 이 소설은 전체주의 이데올로기가 인간의 정신에 어떤 영향을 미치는지 중세 스페인 종교재판을 통해서 보여주고 있다. 이와 같은 비유(parabola)는 인간의 운명과 역사적 상황은 시대가 변했어도 중세 스페인이나 스탈린시대 폴란드나 본질적으로는 차이가 없다는 작가의 확신에 바탕을 두고 있다고 볼 수있다. 토르크베마다는 지상에 신의 왕국을 건설한다는 구실 하에 모든사람을 서로 불신하게 하고 사회 전체에 공포분위기를 의도적으로 조성한다. 그는 공포가 권력을 유지하는 핵심적인 원동력이라고 보고 있다. 공포와 불신을 조장하기 위해서 그는 밀고자들을 중용한다.그는 하나의 이데올로기에 봉사하는 전체주의체제를 만들면, 그 체제는 스스로 체제에 맞는 ‘체제인간’을 만들기 때문에 체제가 유지된다고 판단하고 있다. 그러나 병상에서 토르크베마다는 자기의 모든 언행을 부정하는 유언을 남긴다. 즉 “인간은 신도, 사탄도 없이 사는 것을 배워야 한다. 지상에 신의 왕국은 없을 것이다.” 그의 유언을들은 유일한 사람은 그의 비서 디에고이다. 그러나 디에고는 이미 권력의 화신이 되어 있기 때문에 토르크베마다의 유언에 분노와 충격을 느낀다. 따라서 토르크베마다의 유언이 세상에 알려지지 않은채 영원히 미궁에 빠지고 만다.

영문 초록

Jerzy Anrzejewski (1909-1983) is one of the best-known Polish writers of the 20th century. His novel Ashe and Diamond, which touches upon the drastic problems of postwar Poland in the crucial year 1945, went through 29 editions in Poland and was translated into 27 foreign languages. In his novel Ciemności kryją ziemię (Darkness Covers the Earth, 1957), Andrzejewski analyzes the religious fanaticism and ideological mechanism that have destructive influences on the lives of individuals. Authoritative and fanatical Grand Inquisitor Torquemada ruled Spainwith terror in the 15th century. He believed that the sublime aim of building the Kingdom of God on Earth justified everything. Diego, a young monk of the Dominican Order, who hated the Grand Inquisitor Torquemada, was nominated the personal secretary of the Grand Inquisitor. Torquemada preferred to have a denunciator as his secretary. Following this appointment, Diego was converted to the cause of the terror. In his new position as the personal secretary, Diego also denunciated his best friend Mare to the Grand Inquisitor. Torquemada was convinced that denunciation defends Christianity from heresy. But on his deathbed, Torquemada denied his convictions; further, he also dictated a decree to Diego that there will not be a Kingdom of God on Earth and that one must learn to live without God and Satan. But as Diego was already enjoying his power as the personal secretary of the Grand Inquisitor, he was outraged by this order. This paper aims to focus on the analysis of the personal character of Torquemada.
