국문 초록

폴란드의 스나티스와프 이그나치 비트키에비츠(Stanisław Ignacy Witkiewicz, 1885-1939)와 한국의 이근삼(1929-2003) 은 자신들의 대표작인 <작은 저택에서>(1921)와 <원고지>(1959)를 통해 실험적이고 전위적인 일련의 시도를 통해 사실 주의 연극이 주류를 이루었던 자국의 연극계에 현대적인 새로운 바람을 몰고 온 장본인들이다. 비록 두 작품 사이에는 40년에 가까운 시간상의 차이가 있지만, 해체 위기에 놓인 중산층 가정을 배경으로 상식과 논리에서 벗어난 인물들을 주인공으로 등장시키고 있다는 점, 강렬한 표현주의 기법과 그로테스크한 희비극적 요소들을 적절하게 활용했다는 점, 그리고 이러한 요소들을 통해 현대문명의 모순을 날카롭게 비판하고, ‘비인간적인 것’에 대한 철저한 거부의 의지를 표명했다는 점에서 그 연관성과 의의를 찾아볼 수 있다. <작은 저택에서>와 <원고지>는 모두 비현실적인 극중 상황을 과장되게 전개한 일종의 ‘상황극’으로써, 인과 관계에 의한 전통극의 플롯을 거부하고, 허구적 과장과 희극적 형상화 등의 수법을 통해 인간의 부조리한 상황을 드러내는데 주력하고 있다는 점에서, 1950년대에 각광받았던 ‘부조리극’의 한 갈래로도 분류할 수 있다.

영문 초록

The plays of Stanisław Ingacy Witkiewicz(1885-1939) and Lee Geun-Sam(1929-2003) definitely open the new era of Polish and Korean modern drama. They kept anti-realistic attitude throughout their plays. They applied various techniques and concepts of modern Western theatre to their plays, such as epic theatre alloegory and expressionism. They criticised the political and social situations of contemporary Poland and Korea. Their views toward the society were very cynical and even ridiculous. Witkiewicz's 『In the small manor-house』 and Lee Geun-Sam's 『A Writing Pad』 are the plays bringing a modern trend to the play circles in which plays based on realism were dominant, through experimental, avant-garde attempts. Although there is nearly 40-year time gap between these two plays, they have several commonalities. First, these plays have characters without the common sense and logics against the background of the middle class on the verge of dismantling. The second commonality is the fact that they used powerful expression technique and grotesque elements properly to sharply criticise the paradox of the modern civilization. In addition, these plays emphasize the nature of the unhumane civilization. 『In the small manor-house』 and Lee Geun-Sam's 『A Writing Pad』 show the development of unrealistic situation in a exaggerated way. Furthermore, they refuse traditional drama plot based on the cause and effect relationship. Using fictitious exaggeration, they place focus on revealing the absurd conditions of humans. In this sense, these two works all are deemed to be part of “the theater of absurdness” in the spotlight in 1950's.
