국문 초록

본 본문에서는<이별의 왈츠>의 줄거리와 등장인물들의성격을 여러 모티프 함께 분석해보고 문학의 테마로 자주 다루는 지적 살인의 테마를 논해보고자한다. 소설의 분위기는 1968년 프라하의 정치적 봄이 러시아의 탱크에 의해서 좌절된 이후 체코슬로바키아의 황량한 지적 풍토를 반영하고 있는 듯하다. 주인공들은 계산적이고 이기적이다. 그들은 다른 사람들의 희생을 통해서 이익을 취하려고 한다. 사랑을 가장해서 상대방을 지배하려한다. 바깥세상의 억압적인 분위기가 때때로 소설의 배경에 침입한다. 옹졸한 은퇴 노인들이 도시정화 위원회란 이름으로 도시 거리에서 뛰어다니는 개들을 쫓아다니며 그물로 잡는 그로테스크한 장면들, 낙태 위원회의 괴이한 절차, 비밀정자은행을 통한 형제애 족벌주의를 세우고자하는 의사의 우스꽝스러운 행동. 여자들에 대한 남자들의 태도는 너무 편파적이다. 여기서 여자들은 기본적으로 남자들을 따라 침대로 따라가도록 조종 받고 있다. 또다시 남자 주인공들은 여자들에 의해서 매혹 당하고 동시에 거절당한다. 남자들은 결혼할 것을 강요받는다. 그들은 병적일 정도로 ‘임신의 덫’을 두려워하고 그들의 섹스모험이 ‘애새끼’를 생산할까 봐 공포에 사로잡힌다. <이별의 왈츠>에 나타나는 또 다른 전형적인 쿤데라 스타일의 테마는 사회의 구성원에 의한 능동적인 승인과 더불어 사회에 의해서 저질러지는 죄 없는 개인에 대한 폭력의 테마이다. 작가는 소설 기술에 관한 대담에서“인간이란 어떤 상황에서라도 자기의 이웃을 죽음으로 몰아넣을 수 있는 존재”라고 한 적이 있다.2) 역설적으로 이 소설의 한 주인공 야쿱 자신도 일생동안 인권옹호를 주장해왔지만 비록 자신이 확인은하지 못하지만 그 자신도 간호사를 살해하는 범죄를 저지른다. 부조리한 상황이 벌어지는 블랙 코미디 형태의 소설이다.

영문 초록

In this essay the plot, nature of characters and various motives as well as the theme of intellectual murder will be studied. The atmosphere of novel reveals the desolate intellectual climate of Czechoslovakia after destruction of Prague political Spring by Russian tanks. Heros and heroins are egoistic and they try to get benefit through sacrificing others. They try to control other’s fate by false love. Kundera's knowledge of political oppression leads inexorably to the comic perception that its victims are often, in their private ways, master practitioners of the art. Nowhere is this perception more amply illustrated than inThe Farewell Party, where in the holiday atmosphere of health spa and fertility clinic his people take apparent vacation from the constraints of daily life and press others quite tyrannically into the service of their private dreams. As usual in his fiction, love (in the somewhat debased form of sexual conquest) is the swing on which these people try to move beyond their limited destiny as well as the swing that inevitably returns them to it. One would have to look at eighteenth-century comedies of manners to find love used for deceiving on the scale that it is in this novel, and indeed those highly mechanized comedies also bear comparison with Kundera's complex and tightly woven farce. Among the other features that set his fiction apart from so much contemporary fiction is Kundera's interest and skill in handling the most complex plots. Indeed, the well-oiled plot of his short fiction is brought to perfection in The Farewell Party and gives silent evidence to the oppression of every sort which closes up these lives and returns them to the drawers from which they briefly emerged. Past using sex to bend the world to their will, a secret organization of old men attempts to purify society by catching dogs in butterfly nets and putting them away. The most extreme consequence of a man's actions -in this case, murder- is to him weightless, even trivial.
