국문 초록

이 논문은 불가리아의 전래 동화, 신화, 전설, 이야기, 민요, 전래 풍습 속에 나타난 신화적 세계를 살펴봄으로써 불가리아인들의 정신적 핵심과 세계관(우주관)을 이해하는 것이 목적이다. 불가리아 문화와 불가리아 사람들의 정신 구조와 그 기본 바탕을 이해하는 것은 외국어 교수에 꼭 필요하다. 본 글에서는 하늘, 해, 달, 별, 땅 그리고 우주목(宇宙木)에 대한 불가리아인들의 전통적인 관점이 무엇인지를 살펴보았다. 하늘에는 신(하느님)이 천사와 함께 살고 있으며, 그곳에 천국이 있다고 믿었다. 태양, 달, 별들은 하늘의 제일 아래층에 향로처럼 달려있다. 태양은 슬라브민족들 사이에서 깊은 숭배의 대상들 중 하나였다. 해는 많은 인간적 특성을 가지고 있는데, 아버지 없이 어머니, 자매들(별들과 달)과 산다. 또한 해는 인간적 약점도 가지고 있어, 화도 내며, 결혼도 하며, 슬퍼하기도 하며, 명예를 추구한다. 교회 성화에서 태양은 자주 남자 얼굴 또는 물소, 황소, 양, 수탉으로 묘사된다. 해의 가장 큰 적은 뱀으로, 뱀이 태양을 먹어서 일식이 생긴다고 믿는다. 달도 사람들 사이에서 커다란 숭배의 대상이다. 달은 남성보다는 더 자주 여성으로 여겨진다. 달은 의식(儀式), 풍습, 출산, 결혼, 병치료 등에서 역할을 한다. 옛 불가리아인들은 별은 하늘에 달린 작은 꽃다발이라고 여겼다. 불가리아인들과 모든 슬라브인들은 새로 출생한 모든 아이에게는 자신의 별이 있다고 믿는다. 땅은 동반자인 악마의 열렬한 도움을 받아 신(하느님)에 의해 창조되었다. 땅은 처음에는 아주 평평하고 반듯했지만 후에 커졌다. 땅은 수탉, 거북이, 황소, 뱀, 늙은 맹인의 쇠스랑, 네 마리 독수리의 날개, 두 성인의 엄지손가락 또는 신의 어께 위에 걸쳐져 지탱된다고 전통적으로 믿는다. 불가리아 사람들과 다른 슬라브 사람들은 땅이 신성하고 청결하다고 믿는다. 토지는 생산의 여신으로 존경된다. 우주목에 대한 모티브는 불가리아 전래동화에서 자주 발견된다. 우주목의 역할은 참나무, 단풍나무, 호도나무, 소나무, 그리고 드물게 편백나무, 느릅나무, 포도나무가 수행한다. 불가리아 전래 이야기에서 보이는 꼭대기에 독수리가 앉아 있는 참나무 이미지는 우주목의 전형이다. 불가리아 전통에 따르면 수백년된 이런 나무들과 가지들은 꺾거나 자르면 안된다. 불가리아인들의 우주관의 핵심은 우주의 질서와 인관관계의 질서를 지키 는 것이다. 불가리아 사람들의 우주관의 큰 특징은 비기독교적 요소와 기독교적인 요소가 상호 조화를 이루어 공존한다는데 있다.

영문 초록

This paper is an attempt to look into the mythical world of traditional Bulgarian fairy tales, myths, legends, folk narratives, folk songs and ethnographical customs and to understand the spiritual core of the Bulgarians and Bulgarian's view of the world (cosmos). In a foreign language teaching it is a necessary step to understand the spiritual structure and the basic foundation of the Bulgarian culture and the Bulgarian people. Reviewed are the traditional Bulgarian outlook on the sky (heaven), the sun, the moon, the stars, the land (earth) and the Abor Mundi. It is a traditional belief that in the heaven lives the God together with the angels and that there is the Paradise. The sun, the moon, the stars are hanged like incense burners on the lowest tier of the sky. The sun was an object of deep respect among the Slavs. The sun has many human features. He lives together with his mother, with no father, with his sisters, i.e., the stars and the moon. He has quite a many human weakness; he gets angry, wants to be married, becomes sad, and looks for fame. Very often in church wall paintings the sun is depicted as a face of a man and very often as a buffalo, an ox, a ram or a cock. The major enemy of the sun is the snake. It is believed that the snake swallows the sun and causes the solar eclipses. The moon also is an object of great respect among the people. The moon much frequently is believed to be a female being than a male being. The moon takes a role in rituals, customs, childbirth, marriage and curing serous diseases. The stars are, according the ancient people, nosegays in the sky. It is a common belief among the Bulgarians and the whole Slavic world that every newborn baby has his own star. The earth is created by the God with an active cooperation of the Devil as his partner. At the beginning the earth was completely even and flat, but it enlarged. Many traditional beliefs say that it holds itself upon a cock, a turtle, an ox, a snake, or upon a pitchfork of a blind old man, the wings of four angels, the thumbs of two saints, or upon the arms of the God. The sanctity and the purity of the land is a well-known notion among the Bulgarians and also among the other Slavs. The earth is respected as a goddess of fertility. The motif for the cosmic tree is quite often met in Bulgarian folk tales. The role of the abor mundi is fulfilled by an oak, a maple, a nut-tree, a pine tree, and less often by a cypress, an elm or a grapevine. The image of an oak with an eagle on its top which is found in Bulgarian folk narratives is the prototype of the abor mundi. The Bulgarian tradition forbids strictly those century-old trees to be chopped or even their branches to be cut. The kernel of the Bulgarian myth is connected with the harmonization and the organization of the order of the universe. One distinct characteristic of the Bulgarian worldview is that ancient pagan elements and Christian elements coexist in mutual harmony.
