국문 초록

이온 루카 까라지알레(I. L. Caragiale)의 해학극 <잃어버린 편지 O scrisoare pierdută>는 정치를 통해 출세하려는 자들을 둘러싸고 벌어지는 협박, 배반, 속임수, 무능력 등 인간들의 갖은 부도덕성과 비사회성을 웃음을 통해 강력하게 공격하고 있는 작품이다. ‘우리가 아무리 ∼한 척 해봐야 우리의 본 모습은 이 정도에 불과하다’는 것을 장황한 연설로써가 아니라 희극이라는 예술을 통해 간접적으로 밝히고 있다. 이를 위해 작가가 사용한 다양한 희극적 요소들은 권위를 가진 대상에서 권위의 광휘와 허식을 벗겨내는 방식으로 그 대상의 실체를 드러내어 그 대상에 대한 막연한 두려움을 없애고 오히려 비판적인 의식을 갖게 하는 웃음을 만들어 내고 있다. 작가는 부정적 사회의 모습을 보여 주면서 이를 고칠 근본적인 해결책이 무엇인가는 제시하지 않았다. 단지 상류 사회를 향한 열망, 출세욕, 성공욕구 등을 채우기 위해서 가면을 쓰고 광대처럼 살아가는 것이 과연 얼마만의 가치가 있는가를 자문하게 할 기회를 주고 있을 뿐이다. 우리와는 지역적으로 멀리 떨어져 있는 루마니아의 한 세기 훨씬 이전의 시대 상황을 반영하고 있는 작품이지만 이 작품 속에서 비춰지는 우스꽝스런 사회는 현재 우리 사회의 모습과 그리 다르지 않다. 또한 <잃어버린 편지>의 등장인물들이 보이고 있는 도덕적 결함도 우리 현대인들의 그것과 그리 큰 차이가 없다. 이 연구논문에서는 까라지알레의 대표작을 읽고 분석하면서 신분 상승을 위해 발버둥치는 현대인들의 부정적인 모습을 다시 한 번 돌아볼 수 있는 계기를 마련하고자 한다.

영문 초록

Ion Luca Caragiale (1853-1912) is Romanian playwright and author. Romanias foremost dramatist, his works sharply satirize human society. His masterpiece, Romanian comedy, A Lost Letter, tells the story of elections in a small Romanian provincial town at the end of the nineteenth century. The leader of the opposition mistakenly receives a letter from a drunk citizen who was a postman. The letter is written by the prefect to the most influential lady in town, the wife of the city council president, who is the opposition leaders best friend. The love letter becomes the object of tough political bargaining when the powerful central government dispatches to the town the official candidate, an old decrepit politician. The lovers are torn between their duty to the center and their fear of being exposed. They use threats, police violence, and promises in order to handle the situation when they discover that the centers official candidate also obtained his position because of a letter he had accidentally found. The drama ends "happily," with the incumbents and the opposition dividing the spoils and concluding that the pie is large enough for everyone. I.L. Caragiale rebuke our high society for its immorality whit derision in his satiric comedy, A lost letter. In our high society, there are a lot of disgustful things like intimidation, betrayal, incompetence, deception etc. But author does not inform a certain solution to improve this deformation. It seems to give us a chance to ask ourself if it would be valuable to struggle to ascend.
