국문 초록

비스와바 쉼보르스카(Wisława Szymborska; 1923 - )는 폴란드의 대표적인 시인으로 1996년 노벨 문학상을 수상했다. 쉼보르스카의 시는 낭만적인 감상이나 언어의 유희를 배 제하고, 역사와 문학의 상관 관계, 인간의 실존 문제 등을 다루고 있다. 철학적이고 난해한 주제를 시로 형상화시키는 과정에서 시인은 비장하고, 장엄한 파토스를 사용하기보다는 풍 부한 상징과 은유, 풍자와 파라독스 등을 동원하여 독자의 감성을 두드린다. 쉼보르스카 시의 가장 큰 특징은 우리 주변의 사소하고 일상적인 것에 남다른 관심을 가 지고, 오랜 관찰과 철학적 사유를 건져 비범한 삶의 지혜를 포착하고 있다는 점이다. 시인 은 대상의 핵심으로 성급하게 뛰어들지 않고, 언제나 한 걸음 물러서서 일정한 거리를 유지 하며 그 진면목을 파악하려 애쓴다. 쉼보르스카는 또한 다작(多作)을 꺼리는 작가로도 유명하다. 2차 대전 직후인 1945년 데 뷔한 이래 노벨 문학상 기념 시선집을 제외하고는 불과 10권의 시집만을 출판하였다. 오랜 선별 작업을 거쳐 시집에 수록․공개된 시들은 한 편, 한 편이 대표작이라고 할만큼 그 문 학적 가치를 인정받고 있다.

영문 초록

The award of the 1996 Nobel Prize for Literature to Wisława Szymborska gives deserved prominence to a figure whose reputation has been relatively slow to grow beyond her native Poland. During the years of Soviet oppression, spoke so eloquently for the true feelings of the Polish people, she nonetheless has her own distinctive voice and authority. Born in 1923, Wisława Szymborska made her debut with a Socialist Realist collection titled 『That's What We Live For』 in 1952. (The manuscript was initially considered not ideologically correct enough, ad its publication dragged on for years.) Her second collection, 『Questions Put to Myself』came out in 1954. It is in the semantic hiatus between these two titles that we can catch the first glimpse of the gebuine Szymborska, who reached her maturity with her third collection, in 1957, 『Calling Out to Yeti』. The youthful self-confidence of the first book's title gives way to self-doubt; perhaps most significant, the plural "we" is replaced with the singular "myself". The most extraordinary thing about her achievement is that, in some mysterious and enviable way, the uncompromising profundity of her poems never prevents them form being accessible. Always concerned with the unglamorized actualities of he human condition, often sardonic and very funny, endowed with the most fertile and surprising imagination, Szymborska can now be seen as one of the supremely trustworthy witnesses of our time. Wisława Szymborska, quite simply, does not write irrelevant poems. She is a poet for whom each and every poem matters. Wit, wisdom, and warmth are equally important ingredients in he mixture of qualities that makes her so unusual and every poem of hers so unforgettable. We love her poetry because we instinctively feel that its author genuinely (though by no means uncritically) love us, takes interest in us, will be always there to here what we, human beings, have to say.
