(Socialist Realizm)
Równoleżnik)과 「한국의 봄, 파종기에」(Wiosenny siew na Korei), 그리고 바직(A.
Socialist Realism is an art methodology that was born in the Old Soviet Union with a
view to widely spread socialism to the public through art. Since World War Ⅱ, the
rising socialism countries such as Poland, Hungary and Czech had actively accepted
Socialist Realism as a means to make socialism come to stay within their own territory.
Socialist Realism was greatly in fashion in Poland until 1955 when Stalin died, as
People's Republic of Poland sailed off in 1949 and Socialist Realism became the sole
official guide for arts and literature. Socialist Realism enforced a reversion to techniques
of the second half of the nineteenth century and prohibited any avant-garde experiment.
From 1949 year to 1955 year literature was subjected to recipes imposed by watchdog
officials and "terroreticians" in Poland. The stress was upon the so-called "production
novel" with a factory or collective farm setting. Eventually, this period is evaluated as
"period of errors and mistakes" in today's Polish literary history. Due to the socialist
Government's strict inspection and political tendency to excessively agitate people,
Socialist Realism caused negative function to suppress freedom of creation.
At that time, one of the materials that frequently appeared in Polish Socialist Realism
literature was the very Korean War. The representative works include Wisława
Szymborska's 「From Korea」, Tadeusz Różewicz's 「38 Line」 and 「Korean Spring,
at the time of sowing」 and Adam Ważyk's 「Song about Coca-Cola」. In these works,
Korea is depicted as the unfortunate weak country that should point a gun to the same
race and the tragic land that is full of starvation and poverty. In addition, they
thoroughly attributed the blame for Korean War to USA, and they defined USA as the
enemy that Poland should join efforts together with Korea and defeat.
Even if they commit the error of biased historical recognition, the strong solidarity
feeling with Korea appears in Polish Socialist Realism Poems. This is due to the
historical similarity between Korea and Poland. Historically, Korea and Poland have been
continuously invaded by neighboring countries, and especially during World War Ⅱ, both
of them had to experience the tragedy to lose their sovereignty. Although Korea and
Poland had no direct exchange each other in 1950's, Polish writers showed the
brotherhood and same feeling to Korean people. In addition, we can find their will to
model Korean reality, which is historically very similar to Poland, and then calmly
examine Polish present and future.
