<홍계월전>의 구성원리와 미학적 기반

국문 초록

이 글은 최근 소개된 단국대 103장본 계열을 중심으로 <홍계월전>의 구성원리와 미학적 기반을 밝힌 글이다. <홍계월전>은 곽도사의 두 차례에 걸친 예언에 따라 서사가 전개되므로 ‘예언구도’를 핵심으로 삼은 작품이라 할 수 있다. 작가는 이 ‘예언구도’를 통해 숙명론을 제기하고 있는데, 여기서의 숙명론은 천명사상(天命思想)을 근간으로 한 봉건적 이데올로기로서가 아니라 마땅히 추구해야 할 삶의 보편적 원리라는 의미를 갖는다. 따라서 <홍계월전>에 반영된 숙명론은 수평적 남녀 관계를 당위적 현실로 구현하고픈 작가의 의도를 반영하는 기제로 볼 수 있다. 초기 여성영웅소설의 두드러진 특징은 우월한 여성 대 열등한 남성의 선명한 대조를 통해 ‘남녀 불균형의 미학’을 창안한 점이다. 그런데 18세기 말경에 창작된 <홍계월전>, <김희경전> 등에서는 ‘남녀 불균형의 미학’이 ‘남녀 균형의 미학’으로 전환된 모습을 보인다. 이는 곧 여성영웅소설이 처음에는 ‘남녀 불균형의 미학’을 구현하는 데서 시작되었다가 18세기 말에 ‘남녀 균형의 미학’을 구현한 새로운 작품이 출현한 후로는 이 둘이 별도의 계열을 이루며 공존하게 되었음을 의미한다. 이처럼 <홍계월전>은 초기 여성영웅소설의 면모를 지니면서 여성영웅소설사의 전개에 적지 않은 영향을 끼친 것으로 추정된다. 본고의 논의는 향후 여성영웅소설의 계통을 새롭게 수립하는 데 중요한 지침이 될 수 있을 것으로 기대한다.

영문 초록

This research is an essay that reveals the composition principles and the esthetic foundation of Honggyewol Jeon(홍계월전). Honggyewol Jeon can be said to be a piece having a prophecy structure as its center since its narration is unfolded according to twice prophecies of Gwak guru. The author is suggesting fatalism through this prophecy structure; the fatalism here is not a feudal ideology based on Chyeonmyung(天命) Ideology (an ideology thinking that everything is from God’s will) but holds the meaning that it is a universal principle of life which should be naturally processed. Therefore, the fatalism reflected in Honggyewol Jeon should be seen as the mechanism reflecting the intention of the author who wants to embody the horizontal relationship between male and female as a should be reality. The outstanding characteristics of early female heroism novels are to create ‘the esthetics of imbalance between men and women’ through a clear contrast of a superior woman versus an inferior man. However, in Honggyewol Jeon and Kimheegyung Jeon(김희경전) created around the late 18th Century, the ‘esthetics of imbalance between men and women’ is shown to be transformed as the ‘esthetics of balance between men and women’. This points the fact that female heroism novels started to embody the ‘esthetics of imbalance between men and women’ at first, but after new works emerged which presented the ‘esthetics of balance between men and women’ in the late 18th Century, the two came to coexist and form separate systems. The above research result is expected to be an important guide in newly establishing the system of female heroism novels in the future.
