국문 초록

해방을 전후한 시기의 박태원은, 중국 고전소설의 번역과 역사소설 창작의 두 가지 문학적 양상을 보여주면서 일제 강점기와 월북 사이의 시기를 보내었다. 당대의 사회적 상황과 관련하여 창작의 자유를 강압하는 환경의 장벽을 넘어선 작가를 찾기 어려웠다는 점에서 이는 박태원 개인의 문제가 아니라 총체적인 민족사의 비극이었으며, 그의 번역소설과 역사소설이 현실 도피적인 측면이 약여한 만큼 그 도피는 또 다른 의미에서 현실에 대한 불가피한 반응 양상이자 소극적 부정의 의식을 반영하는 것이 된다. 그의 번역소설은 전체적으로 보아 민족적 질곡에 대한 인식이 있었고 이를 표현하고자 하는 작가의식이 없지 않았으나 궁극에 있어서는 일제 강압의 무게를 벗어나지 못했고 친일 문필로부터도 자유롭지 못했다. 다만 그의 번역소설이 그 시기에 급작스럽게 주어진 문학적 산물이 아니라 그의 문학적 생애의 시발과 관련된 여러 요인의 결과이며, 동시에 추후 지속적으로 역사소설을 쓰고 또 북한에서 역사소설로 대가의 반열에 오를 수 있도록 하는 창작 행위의 사전 정지작업에 해당한다는 점에 있어서는 매우 중요한 측면이 있다 할 것이다. 또한 해방공간에서 그가 쓴 여러 유형의 역사소설들은, 변화하는 시대적 상황을 수용하면서 비록 ‘전향선언’에 이르기는 했지만 여전히 사회주의적 세계관과 관련된 그의 창작 성향을 드러내는 면모를 보인다. 이는 곧 그가 월북한 이후에 북한 체제의 최고지도자 김일성이 높이 평가하는 최고의 역사소설 작가로 자신의 위상을 높이기까지, 그것의 기반을 닦는 창작 경험과 그 훈련의 시기를 보낸 것임을 추산할 수 있다. 박태원이라는 작가는 이렇게 남북 양측에 그 창작 무대를 두고, 작품의 경향에 있어서도 남북이 함께하는 연구의 시발을 합의할 만한 몇 안 되는 인물 중 하나이며, 그의 파란만장한 생애와 작품의 생산이 곧 민족적 비극의 시기에 일상적 사고와 삶을 가졌던 지식인 일반이 어떻게 두 정치체제 사이의 좁고 험한 길을 걸어갔는가를 보여주는 하나의 표본 모델이다. 그러한 점에서 해방을 전후한 박태원의 번역소설과 역사소설은, 그의 전반적인 작품세계 속에서, 또 당대의 한국문학 및 북한문학 가운데서 주목하여 관찰할 의미를 갖고 있다 하겠다.

영문 초록

Before and after the emancipation of Korea, Park Tae-Won spent his time during the Japanese colonization moving up to North Korea while working on the two following aspects of his literature: translating Chinese classical novels and originatinga genre of historical novel. Considering the social conditions of the time that suppressed freedom of creation in writing, it was hard to find a writer who had overcome the social barriers. This was not only an individual matter for Park Tae-Won but an overall tragedy ofthe national history. Because his translated and historical novels represent a lack of escapism, they were inevitably a reaction to the reality and also reflect his denial of it. Overall his novels demonstrated awareness of the ethnic yoke and conscious to express this. He was not able to escape Japanese oppression or freed from pro-Japanese literary circles. But his translated novels were not only a literary product within a short period of time but also a result of different factors whichbecame the starting point of his literary work. At the same time, it is recognized for helping him to continue to write historical novels, and to establish his position as a historical novel writer in North Korea. Also, the various kinds of his historical novels written during the emancipation period accepted the changing conditions of the society. He declared for another direction later on but his works still show the aspect of originating a new genre in the socialistic world view. Until he became the best historical novel writer in North Korea, whom the president of North Korea Kim Il-sung thinks highly of, he spent many years of literary training to firmly establish the foundation for his writing experience. The writer Park Tae-Won had spaces in the literature of both North and South Korea. His works also reflectaspects of both North and South Korea, and himself as a role-model of someone living a life as an ordinary educated person who experienced two different political regimes. For this reason, his translated and historical novels, both before and after the emancipation of Korea, deserve attention among the North and South Korean literature of the time.
