박태원 소설의 희곡적․연극적 변용·가능성에 관한 일고찰

국문 초록

오늘날 한국의 문화예술 분야에 있어 주목되는 현상들 가운데 하나는 근대의 재조명이다. 물론 근대의 풍경은 텔레비전 드라마나 영화 그리고 연극을 통해 끊임없이 재현되어왔다. 그러나 지금까지의 그것이 주서사를 뒷받침하는 보조적 역할을 해왔다면 오늘날의 그것은 주서사 자체를 이루고 있다는 점에서 지금까지와는 다른 양상을 띤다. 그리고 그것이 재현되는 방식은 물론 주서사 자체에는 박태원의 소설이 가로놓여 있다. 본고는 이러한 문제의식을 바탕으로 박태원의 소설이 오늘날 어떻게 새롭게 변용되어 나타나고 있는가를 살펴보고자 했다. 박태원은 자신이 소설을 창작하는 데 있어 영화가 얼마나 큰 영향을 미쳤는가에 대해 천명한 바 있다. 그리고 연극과 소설, 그리고 영화의 관계를 생각했을 때 시간상으로 가장 앞선 예술의 형태인 연극이 각 장르에 미친 영향은 상당하다. 이러한 기본적 인식을 바탕으로 본고에서 주목하고자 했던 것은 박태원 소설이 희곡으로 변용된 사례였다. 그러나 예상과는 다르게 박태원의 소설이 희곡으로 변용되어 상연된 사례를 찾아보기는 어려웠다. 그러나 현 문화예술 분야에 두드러지게 나타나고 있는 근대 풍경의 재현 현상은 금세 식어버릴 것 같지 않다. 그리하여 본고에서는 앞으로 박태원 소설이 연극적․희곡적으로 변용될 가능성을 참작하여 이 소설이 가지고 있는 연극적․희곡적 성격을 밝히는 것을 주목적으로 삼았다. 본고는 1930년대 조선이라는 나라의 특수한 상황과 현재 한국의 상황이 의식적인 면에 있어서 크게 다르지 않다는 전제에서 시작되었다. 그리하여 본론 첫 장에서는 오늘날 근대의 풍경이 재현되고 있는 이유에 대해 나름대로 밝혀보았다. 그리고 이를 바탕으로 영화적 문법을 따르고 있다는 박태원의 소설이, 비록 직접적으로 재현되어 나타나고 있지는 않지만, 오늘날에 다시금 다양한 장르로 재현되는 이유를 연극과 소설, 그리고 영화의 관계를 통해 규명하였다. 마지막으로 본고에서 궁극적으로 살펴보고자 했던 박태원 소설의 연극적․희곡적 변용의 가능성을 ｢소설가 구보씨의 일일｣이 지니고 있는 연극성을 밝힘으로써 가늠해 보았다. 영화에 매료되어 있던 박태원이 소설 창작에 있어 영화적 기법을 활용한 것은 영화를 넘어서 소설의 연극성을 나타낸다. 허구처럼 보이는 실제를 허구를 통해 실재로 환유시켜 의미를 생성해 내는 주제의식을 바탕으로 연극적 무대에서 극적으로 과장된 움직임을 보이는 인물이 연극적 플롯에 맞춰 행위 하는 모습은 이 소설이 한 편의 연극으로 변용되는 것이 얼마나 용이한가를 보여준다. 이상과 같이 ｢소설가 구보씨의 일일｣을 다양한 스토리의 가능성을 내포하고 있는 하나의 원천소스로 규명한 본고에서 한 가지 아쉬움이 남는다면 재창작본과의 비교․고찰의 부재이다. 그러나 현재 문화예술의 흐름으로 보아 근대 풍경의 재현은 당분간 계속될 전망으로 보인다. 그렇다면 차후에 ｢소설가 구보씨의 일일｣을 원천소스로 한 작품이 가시화되어 나타나는 그 지점에서 본고에서 못 다한 논의들을 지속해볼까 한다. 끊임없이 통합되어 나타나는 시간처럼 본고의 논의도 차후에 그것들과 맞물려 좀 더 풍성해지지 않을까 기대한다.

영문 초록

At present, one of the noticeable phenomena in Korean cultural arts is to shed new lights on early modern times. Undoubtedly the scene of the early modern times has been recreated through TV dramas, movies, and theatrical arts. However, it enters on a new phase in that the recreation of the early modern times has been used to support main prologue until now, the early modern times recreated today is based on the main prologue itself. And not only the method the early modern period is reproduced but also the main prologue itself has much to do with Park Tae Won’ novels. In this study, I tried to investigate how Park Tae Won’s novels have been transformed until now based on such a critical mind. Park Tae Won would make it clear that the movies had crucial effect on his writing novels. And considering the relationship among plays, novels and movies, the theatrical arts, which advances most in terms of time, has a great deal of influence on each genre. The thing I noticed in this study on the basis of this basic recognition is the case that Park Tae Won’ novels were transformed into dramas. But unexpectedly it was difficult to find out the instances that Park Tae Won’s novels have been transformed into dramas. In spite of that, the trend of the recreation of early modern scenes, which appear notably in current culture and art field, is not likely to wither away easily. Thus, I focused on figuring out the dramatic and theatrical characteristics that this novel can provide considering the possibility that Park Tae Won’ novels can be transformed dramatically and theoretically. This study is based on the premises that the special conditions in 1930s when Chosun Dynasty was facing and the present conditions of Korea are not different from each other in an aspect of consciousness. Thus, in the first chapter of main subject, I explained there as on why the scene from the early modern times is recreated nowadays in my own way. Even though Park Tae Won’s novels that may comply with the grammar from movies are not directly recreated, the reasons why Park Tae Won’s novels are now reproduced into a variety of genres including a play, a novel, and a movie were found out through the relation among plays, novels, and movies. In conclusion, I tried to balance the possibility of dramatic and theatrical transformation in Park Tae Won’s novels, which was what it was intended to investigate ultimately in this study, by clarifying the theatrical aspect which the novel has.
