박경리 소설의 인물창조원리와 『土地』로의 확대양상 연구

국문 초록

본고에서는 박경리 소설의 인물 창조 원리와 『土地』로의 확대 양상을 통해 박경리의 작가의식을 읽어 보았다. 박경리 소설의 인물은 운명 개척자, 사랑의 구도자, 회의주의자, 反사회적 악인으로 유형화되며 운명의 극복 의지와 생명성의 인식이라는 모티프라는 점에서 『土地』로 확대된다. 첫째, 운명 개척자형으로 명명되는 『土地』의 서희류의 여성 주인공들은 인간 존재의 결핍과 좌절을 통해 변화, 발전, 성숙하면서 ‘작가의 이상형’으로 설정된다. 『불신시대』의 지영, 『김약국의 딸들』의 용빈, 『파시』의 명화, 『표류도』의 현회 등이 이에 속한다. 둘째, 월선류의 사랑의 구도자형이다. 박경리에게 낭만적 사랑이란 인간이 인간일 수 있는 유일한 덕목인 생명의 원천이다. 그러므로 작가는 인간의 좌절과 결핍이라는 한계를 극복하는 진정한 사랑의 구도자를 찾아내려 하는 경향을 보인다. 전쟁이라는 성장기의 체험을 통하여 자기 의식을 소유하지 않은 삶은 허망하다는 것을 절감한 작가는 자아 실현이라는 열정의 하나로서 낭만적 사랑에 천착하고 이를 인물을 통해 형상화한다. 셋째, 이상현 등의 회의주의자형이다. 박경리 소설에서 회의주의자형은 삶의 복잡성, 다면성을 지닌 인물이다. 『파시』에서 응준은 사랑하는 여인인 명화를 지켜주지 못하고, 전쟁의 공포와 새로운 연인인 죽희 사이에서 방황하는 회의주의자적 지식인으로 표상화된다. 넷째, 조준구류의 反사회적 악인형이다. 『김약국의 딸들』에서 용옥의 시아버지인 서영감은 아들인 기수가 없는 사이 며느리인 용옥을 겁탈하여 용옥을 죽음으로 몰아간다. 또한 『표류도』에서 최강사는 ‘나’로 하여금 죽음의 문턱까지 다다르게 한다. 『土地』는 박경리의 소설이 6․25에서 근대적 자아의 형상화로 나아가는 과정에서 완성되었다. 작가가 『土地』이전의 모든 작품은 습작이었다고 밝힌 바와 같이 『土地』는 박경리 문학의 결정으로 작가의 모든 사상과 문학적 창조성이 응집되어 나타나 있는 작품으로 볼 수 있다. 결국 박경리의 소설은 50년대 초기 단편 세계와 1960년대 장편 소설들, 그리고 『土地』로 나누어 질 수 있다. 따라서 『土地』의 인물들은 기존 박경리 소설에 나타난 인물형의 확대 양상으로 볼 수 있을 것이다. 소설의 인물들은 소설의 허구성에 기여하면서 독특한 미학적 효과를 만들어낸다. 이렇듯 박경리 소설의 인물창조 원리는 운명의 극복 의지와 생명성의 인식이라는 두 모티프를 통해 『土地』로 확대된다.

영문 초록

This manuscript is on character creation principle of Park Kyoung Ri’s novel, and her writer-consciousness through exploring 『The Land』’s expansion aspect. The character of Park Kyoung Ri’s novel is materialization of a seeker of love, a skeptic, and a society’s wrongdoer, and the 『The Land』is written with the motif of a will to overcome fate, and recognition of a will to survive. First, the female protagonists of Suh Hee style’s kind of 『The Land』, who are named to be seekers of life, change, improve, and mature through deficiency of being a human and associated frustrations, to the author’s character ideal. 『Age of Distrust』’s Gee Young, 『Kim Pharmacy’s Girls』’s Yong Bin, 『A Seasonal Fish Market』’s Myoung Hwa, 『Phyo Ryu Do』’s Hyun Hway, etc, are characters who are included in this idea Second is Wall Sun style’s seeker of love model. To Park Kyung Ri, romantic love is a unique virtuous quality that humans possess which is a fountain of life. Therefore the author tries to search for the true seeker of love who has overcome human’s inadequacy and limitations. Through the maturation process of a war, the author felt keenly that a life without self-consciousness is useless, and as a passion for self-realization, she was obsessed with romantic love, and expressed that through her characters. Third is about skeptics like Lee Sang Hyun. In Park Kyung Ri’s novel, the skeptic model is multi-faceted conveying life’s complexity. The character Ung Jun from 『A Seasonal Fish Market』 is portrayed as a skeptical intellectual who couldn’t protect Myoung Hwa, and at a loss, between the terrors of war and a new lover. Fourth is the society’s wrongdoer model of Cho Zun Gu style’s. In 『Kim Pharmacy’s Girls』, Yong Oak’s wife’s father, elderly man Suh, rapes his daughter-in-law Yong Oak while his son Gi Sue is not around, and Yong Oak is nearly driven to death. 『The Land』 was completed in the process of Park Kyung Ri’s novel becoming a modern self’s actualization in 6․25. In the vain of the author’s statement that all her previous works were study materials, 『The Land』 is Park Kyung Ri’s greatest literary work cohering all of her ideas and creativity. Ultimately, Park Kyung Ri’s novels can be categorized into the early days of short novels in the 1950’s, 1960’s long novels, and 『The Land』. Therefore the characters of 『The Land』 can be considered as expansion of the character models of her earlier works. The characters of the novel contribute to the novel’s fictional aspects, and bring about unique esthetic effects. Park Young Ri’s character creation principle is expanded as 『The Land』 through the two motifs－of a will to overcome life, and a will to survive.
