『님의 沈黙』과 『달마의 침묵』에 나타난 禪의 세계

국문 초록

한용운은 1917년에 오도송을 시로 지어 부른 본격적인 출가승려이고, 최승호는 불교정신을 삶과 시로 체현한 재가시인이다. 그러나 이 두 시인이자 불교인은 공히 선과 불교세계를 정공법으로 치열하게 마주한 사람이며, 또한 시와 선적, 불교적 세계를 틈없이 일치시킨 시인이다. 이 논문은 이와 같은 한용운의 시집 님의 沈黙(1926) 과 최승호의 시집 달마의 침묵 (1998)에 나타난 선의 세계를 탐구하는 것은 물론 이들을 통하여 20세기 한국시사 속의 선담론의 실상과 그 의미를 밝히는 데 목적을 두고 있다. 이 두 시집을 함께 논의하는 까닭은 이들 시집이 각 시인의 시작 전개과정 속에서는 물론, 우리 근현대시사 속에서 그 어느 시집보다도 선의 문제를 심도 있게 천착하여 미학적으로 수준 높게 형상화하고 있기 때문이다. 또한 이 두 시집이 제목에서는 물론 형식과 내용 양 측면에서 상당한 연관성 및 유사성을 지니고 있기 때문이다. 이 두 시집은 다음의 몇 가지 측면에서 우리 시사 속에 특징적이면서도 의미 있는 모습을 드러내었다. 첫째, 禪心이 시의 출발점이자 도달점일 수 있다는 가능성을 보여주었다. 둘째, 역대 선사들의 禪語및 禪談이 기존의 시라는 양식과 훌륭하게 결합되어 장르 간의 통섭이 이루어질 수 있는 가능성을 보여주었다. 셋째, ‘님’ ‘달마’ ‘침묵’ 등의 키워드를 통해 선의 형상화에 함축성과 탄력성을 더해주었다. 넷째, 이미지를 지우려는 선의 수사학과 이미지를 재창조하려는 시의 수사학을 효과적으로 공존시키고 있다. 다섯째, 시쓰기가 시인의 선적 구도 및 구원행위의 일종임을 뚜렷하게 보여주었다. 여섯째, 문명사와 문화사의 대전환이 진행되고 있는 이 시대에, ‘오래된 미래’처럼 이 시대의 문제를 해결하는 데 유효한 하나의 정신이자 가치론을 제시해주었다. 여기서 다룬 두 시집은 시, 선, 시와 선, 시와 삶의 문제를 함께 해결하고자 하는 사람들에게 큰 시사점을 제공해줄 것이다.

영문 초록

Han Yong-Woon, who had renounced the world and become a Buddhist monk, transformed O-Do-Song into poems in 1917, and Choi Seung-Ho, who is at once a Buddhist and poet, has embodied Buddhism in the form of poems and by means of the way he leads his life. However, these two, as individuals, have aggressively confronted the world of Zen and Buddhism in a very masterly way, and, as poets, accurately identified the poems with the worlds of Zen and Buddhism. The aim of the current paper is to examine the worlds of Zen as such represented in Han Yong-Woon's The Silence of My Lover(1926)and Choi Seung-Ho's The Silence of Dharma(1998). The reason for discussing the two collections of poetry together is that none of the Korean poets have ever been more totally immersed in the matter of Zen, nor have they embodied it more aesthetically and outstandingly throughout the modern and recent history of Korean poetry than the two poets, each of whom has manifested it best in their respective collections throughout their whole life. Besides, as shown in the titles, the two collections of poetry are quite associated with and similar to each other, and they really are in terms of both form and subject. The two collections of poetry have demonstrated some remarkable and meaningful aspects in the context of the history of Korean poetry from several points of view as suggested in the following. Firstly, they have opened up a possibility of the spirit of Zen being both the departure and destination for poetry. Secondly, they have shown that the utterances and dialogues from monks of Zen Buddhism dating from old times could superbly be integrated with the established genre of poetry, and thereby revealed that it is feasible for the genres to be incorporated into each other. Thirdly, implication and adaptability have been included in their manifesting Zen through such keywords as ‘Nim,’ ‘Dharma,’ ‘Silence,’ Fourthly, the rhetorics of Zen, which tend to remove images, have effectively been made to coexist with those of poetry, which tend to recreate images. Fifthly, they have clearly shown that writing poems is part of the poet's doing dharma practice and seeking salvation. Sixthly, in the current civilization and culture of great fluctuations occurring, they have suggested a spirit or system of value which could efficiently be employed to cope with such current situation as the ‘ancient future’ has ever been. The two collections of poetry being dealt with in this paper will give some significance to those who seek to find solutions to the problems of the poetic, Zen, both the poetic and Zen, or, the poetic and life at the same.
