This paper aims to investigate and record the place-names in Masan-ri, Maengdong-myeon, Eumseong-gun, Chungcheongbuk-do. Place-name is one of the very important cultural heritages of a nation"s culture. While most of orally transmitted place-names tell us much about their cultural and linguistic characteristics, written place-names do the same function more certainly. But few place-names of a very small area have been kept recorded. So, in order to get place-names of small area we cannot but depend upon some native informants.
A front place-name element and a back place-name element are combined to form the place-names of Masan-ri. Most of the front place-name elements not only modify the back place-name elements but represent the motivations of the place-names. And those back place-name elements make reference to the places named and form the essence of the place-names.
The details of the place-names in Masan-ri are as follows;
First, there exist a few pure Korean vocabulary such as ‘Sil’ and ‘Mae’ in the name of natural villages. They originated from ancient Korean. And some elements like ‘Sil’, ‘San’, ‘Teo’, ‘Pyeong’ are used as back place-name elements.
Second, ‘Choksae’, ‘Munyeo’, ‘Pi’, ‘Keun’, ‘Dwit’, ‘Mang’, ‘Nagamak’, ‘Deok’, ‘Saeteo’, ‘Isin’, etc. were found to form the front place-name elements for the name of a valley. And as back place-name elements ‘Gol’, ‘Ul’, ‘Gureongtingi’, ‘Gure’, etc. were found.
Third, front place-name elements of the name of a mountain pass are those words related to things, shapes, villages, etc. And most of the back place-name elements are ‘Gogae’.
Fourth, front place-name elements of a field name are those words related to the location, the attribute and the shape of the field, and related to some specific things or the villages. And ‘Deul’, ‘Muringi’, ‘Baemi’ and others appear as back place-name elements.
Fifth, back place-name elements of a ridge name are ‘Deungi’, ‘Bong’, ‘San’ and so on. And most of the front place-name elements in pond names and bridge names are formed to indicate the name of the village where they belong to.
As a conclusion, most of the place-names in Masan-ri are pure Korean. Most of the place-name elements are ordinary vocabulary. And what is more, place-names of this area are valuable Korean vocabulary materials because some ancient Korean vocabulary are found in the place-names now.
