Qualifiers that belong to Elementary school level Korean Grammar has the grammatical function of defining and limiting the meaning of the word that follows. In order to accurately and specifically express one’s thoughts and to clearly understand others’ intentions, effective understanding and appropriate use of qualifiers must be learned and it can also contribute to effective communication and expression that is intended in the Elementary school curriculum for the Korean language. In addition, it can increase the ability to understand the complex interpretive magnification of simple sentences, and by expanding the investigative mind in the Korean language, it can also contribute to cultural creation of the Korean language.
However, grammatical concept and categories of qualifiers that are presented in textbooks of teachers’ guides are obscure, and is not able to sufficiently realize the characteristic value of knowledge in the Korean language intended by the curriculum as it is taught in combination with literature and writing. In addition, because studies pertaining to the current status of qualifier use by elementary school student have not been conducted, debate on its effective teaching method is also inadequate.
The purpose of this study is to clarify the grammatical concept and categories of qualifiers based on their educational value and understanding of current educational circumstances, and to prepare an effective teaching method based on the curriculum.
In chapter II, by observing the general Korean grammar, grammar being taught in schools, and the elementary school curriculum, concept and categories of qualifiers were established.
In chapter III, based on the established categories of qualifiers, teaching contents of qualifiers presented in textbooks and teacher’s guides were analyzed. And through comparison of the conditions of qualifier use by children, problems that exist in the teaching method for use of qualifiers were revealed.
In chapter Ⅳ, teaching steps were established by each category of qualifiers, and specific teaching materials based on inquiry learning model were framed and presented.
The significance of this study is in the fact that it established clear concept and categories of elements of the qualifiers as a part of the Korean language in elementary school curriculum, the fact that it presented a directional content for teaching the use of qualifiers by studying and analyzing the status of qualifier use by children, the fact that it identified new teaching methods based on characteristics of knowledge in the Korean language, and the fact that it framed a specific teaching method that can easily be applied in actual educational setting.
