국문 초록

  9.11 테러는 미국인들에게 뿐 아니라 전 세계인에게도 비극적인 사건이었다. 본 연구의 목적은 한국의 사회과 교사들이 9.11 테러에 어떻게 인식하고 반응하였는지, 사건 후 어떤 시각을 갖게 되었고, 교실에서는 이 사건을 어떻게 다루고 있는지를 알아본 후, 9.11 테러가 사회과 교육에 미친 영향 및 교육적인 의미를 살펴보는 것이다. 이 연구를 위해 전국의 중ㆍ고등학교 사회과 교사들을 대상으로 설문조사를 실시하였다. 총 500명을 대상으로 우편으로 설문지를 발송한 결과 110명의 교사들이 설문에 응답하였다. 9.11 테러가 테러리즘 교육에 주는 시사점을 문헌연구를 통해 살펴보았으며, 이어 실증연구의 결과를 분석하였다. 설문대상자인 교사들의 대부분은 한국의 교육 현장에서 9.11 테러가 인기 있는 수업주제는 아니지만, 향후 테러리즘 교육이 필요함을 지적하였다. 분석결과를 기초로 사회과에서의 테러리즘 교육이 세계화, 국제분쟁, 문화이해, 혹은 세계역사 등의 커다란 맥락에서 이루어져야 함을 제안하였다.

영문 초록

  The event of September 11 in 2001 was a disastrous experience not only to Americans but also to people around the world. The purpose of the study was to examine Korean social studies teachers" responses to September 11 and the ways the teachers have dealt with it in the class. The influence and implication of 9/11 on social studies education in Korea was also pursued. For this study 500 social studies teachers at the secondary level were sampled nation-widely and 110 teachers among them responded to the survey. As an implication of 9/11 on education, education on terrorism was discussed. Although terrorism is not a popular subject in the Korean schools yet, the survey participants responded that terrorism needed to be taught in school. Finally it is proposed that the teaching of terrorism should be delivered in a broader context such as, globalization, international conflict, cultural understanding or world history.
