Modern novels which have 'train' as key motive have been examined. Nothing has been more attractive and overbearing at the same time than 'train'. Although the rail road which penetrates the country from north to south radically changed the life from the aspects of speed and transportation, it was the emblem of exploitation upon the people. Subsequently, train was an object of completely dual feelings for the people of the colony. While the motive of 'train' appeared in the modern novels from 1910s to the end of colonial period reflected the reality of the colony, it also influenced the establishment of a novel. These effects were weak in 1910s. The train appeared in 『Cold-Hearted』is utilized as a 'new' place of narration. It was a place to speech for the hero with enlightening attitude. In spite of the fact that the sacrifice of peasants around the area of rail road construction was outstanding during the period of 1910s in reality, it was not easiJy found. 『Man-Se-Jeon』(萬歲前) of Yeom, Sang-Seop synthesizes the narration tools used in other writers' motive of 'train'. The speaker denounces and criticizes the intellect and people of the colony by observing the orientation of the speaker's inner world and the passengers. This phenomenon also occurs in『Hometownd』of Hyeon, Jin-Geon and works of Choi, Myoung-Ik. In particular, observing the passengers who get on and off the train in the space where the hero, Lee, In-Hwa, passes through reaches the peak in 『Jang-Sam-I-Sa』of Choi, Myoung-Ik. The passengers debut and exeunt like an actor as if the train is a stage. The short length episodes of the passengers correspond with a play. The peasants who abandon the hometown appear in『Hometown』of Hyeon, Jin-Geon, 『Transition Period』of Han, Seol- Ya and『A Farmer』of Lee, Tae-Jun. The gap between the meanings of 'train' is as bigger as the gap between the views on art and reality of the writers. In case of Han, Seol-Ya, a member of KARP (Korea Artista Proleta Federatio), she thought the fundamental reason which devastated the rural area was industrialization. She describes an aspect of this phenomenon through images of factories and rail road. This cognition of the reality through 'train' is not easily found in works of other writers. 『Rail Road』of Lee, Tae-Jun presents a new aspect of the motive of 'train'. While the works of this period were focused on the traveller, this novel focused on the view of a permanent resident. It presented the irony of life through mixed feelings of love and hatred of a young man who residents in a temporary train station.
