공통 교육과정 외국어 교과로서의 수어교육 방안 고찰

국문 초록

이 연구는 미국 일반학생을 대상으로 한 수어교육 관련 연구를 분석하여 우리나라 공통교육과정 외국어 과목에 수어를 포함하는 방안을 살펴보고, 수어를 외국어 과목으로 지도하기 위한 방안을 고찰하기 위하여 실시되었다. 이를 위하여 일반학생을 대상으로 제2언어 수어교육을 실시한 미국의 수어교육 현황을 살펴보고, 외국어 교과로 수어를 교육하는 것의 특징과 우리나라에서 외국어 교과로 수어를 지도하는 방안을 제안하고자 하였다. 미국에서는 중․고등학교 외국어 교과에 수어를 포함하여 지도하고 있다. 또한, 수어를 제2언어로 지도할 때는 언어의 양태 고려, 언어 전이와 언어 보편성 고려, 학습자의 수어과목 이수 동기 반영, 수어의 표현상 특징 반영, 구성주의적 교수법 적용, 수어 몰입교육 등을 고려한 교육이 필요하다. 또한, 우리나라에서 외국어 교과로 수어를 교육하기 위해서는 수어에 대한 인식제고, 수어의 정체성 확립, 다양한 수어 교육과정과 교재개발, 수어 교수법과 수어교육 방법 개발과 적용, 수어교원 양성과 질 관리, 정부의 정책적 지원과 수어교육 관계자의 협력이 필요한 것으로 기술하였다. 수어를 사용하는 청각장애인의 의사소통 권리를 보장하고 수어 저변확대를 위해서는 수어를 중․고등학교 외국어 교과로 채택할 필요가 있으며, 이를 위해서는 체계적인 교육과정과 교재개발, 양질의 수어교원이 필요함을 제안하였다.

영문 초록

This study was conducted to suggest ways to incorporate Korean Sign Language(KSL) as a foreign language subject in the national curriculum of South Korea by analyzing research related to sign language education for hearing students. The study also aimed to examine the necessary preparations for teaching KSL as a foreign language subject. To achieve this, the study reviewed the current status of sign language education for hearing students in United States and proposed strategies for teaching KSL as a foreign language subject in South Korea. In the United States, sign language is included in foreign language subjects in middle and high schools. When teaching sign language as a second language, it is important to consider the modality of the language, language transfer and universality, the motivations of learners, the expressive features of sign language, the application of constructivist teaching methods, and the implementation of immersive sign language education. Additionally, to teach KSL as a foreign language in South Korea, it is necessary to raise awareness of sign language, establish its identity, develop diverse curricula and teaching materials, create and apply effective teaching methods, ensure the training and quality of sign language teachers, and secure governmental support and collaboration among stakeholders. To guarantee the communication rights of the deaf community and to expand the use of sign language, it is essential to adopt sign language as a foreign language subject in middle and high schools in South Korea. This requires systematic KSL curriculum development, various teaching materials, and well-trained sign language teachers.
