미술교육에서 플라톤과 아리스토텔레스 철학의 시사점: 예술에 대한 논의를 중심으로

국문 초록

본 연구는 고대 그리스의 철학자 플라톤과 아리스토텔레스의 예술적 사유와 미학적 문제의식을 통하여 미술교육에 관한 시사점을 도출하는 데 목적을 두었다. 이를 위하여 본고에서는 먼저 플라톤과 아리스토텔레스에게서 각기 추구된 예술적 논의들과 미학적 문제들을 살펴본 후, 그 가운데 테크네, 미메시스, 카타르시스에 대한 이들의 상반된 견해를 중심으로 전개된 논의들과 이로부터 도출되는 미술교육의 주요한 시사점을 짚어보았다. 우선 테크네의 개념은 미메시스와의 연관 속에서 논의되었는데, 플라톤이 미메시스에 대해 부정적인 태도를 보였다면, 아리스토텔레스는 긍정적인 시선으로 미메시스를 이해하였다. 나아가 비극에서의 격앙된 감정에 대해서도 두 철학자는 완전히 다른 입장을 취하였는데, 플라톤이 이에 대한 경각심을 일깨웠다면, 아리스토텔레스는 카타르시스의 긍정적인 효과와 역할에 대한 해석을 내어 놓았다. 이러한 논의들을 바탕으로 본고는 양자 모두로부터 미술교육에의 시사점을 도출할 수 있었는데, 플라톤으로부터는 시각문화미술교육에 필요한 미학적 문제 제기와 방법을, 아리스토텔레스로부터는 재현의 가치와 의미, 미술창작 활동에서 얻는 즐거움과 미술치료와 관련된 비판점을 이끌어낼 수 있었다. 이와 아울러 본고에서는 두 철학자의 사유로부터 공교육으로서 미술교육이 지향하는 지점에 대한 반성과 미학적·철학적 방법의 중요성도 강조하였다.

영문 초록

The purpose of this study is to derive implications for art education through the artistic thinking and aesthetic awareness of ancient Greek philosophers Plato and Aristotle. For this purpose, this paper first examines the artistic discussions pursued by Plato and Aristotle, and then looked at major implications for art education derived from the conflicting views on techne, mimesis, and catharsis among the artistic theses developed by the two philosophers. First of all, the concept of techne was discussed in relation to mimesis. While Plato showed a negative attitude toward mimesis, Aristotle understood mimesis from a positive perspective. Furthermore, the two philosophers took completely different positions on the heightened emotions in tragedy. While Plato raised awareness about this, Aristotle offers an interpretation of the positive effects and role of catharsis. From this, this paper derives implications from both: from Plato, the raising of aesthetic issues and methods necessary for visual culture art education, and from Aristotle, the value and meaning of representation, the pleasure gained from art creation activities, and critical points related to art therapy. In addition, this paper reflects on the direction of art education as public education and emphasizes the importance of aesthetic and philosophical methods based on the thoughts of the two philosophers.
