국문 초록

이 글에서는 10세기 전반 渤海와 契丹의 전쟁을 살펴보면서, 전쟁 당시 양국의 군사력이 어떠했는지 추적해보았다. 10세기 전반 거란은 중원으로의 진출을 실현하기 위해 중원과 연대할 가능성이 높았던 발해를 침공하여 전쟁을 일으켰는데, 이 전쟁은 20년이 넘는 오랜 세월 동안 지속되었다. 발해의 군사 편제는 중앙군 10衛, 左·右三軍, 左·右神策軍과 각 府·州 등에 배치되어 있던 지방군으로 편성되어 있었다. 따라서 발해는 이와 같은 군사 편제를 기반으로 하여 10세기 전반 거란과 전쟁을 벌였던 것이다. 그리고 거란의 군사는 御將親軍, 斡魯朶軍, 大首領部族軍, 衆部族軍 등으로 구성된 중앙군과 부족군, 五京鄕兵, 邊境守兵으로 구성된 지방군 그리고 전쟁 시 거란이 屬國들에게서 군사를 차출하여 구성된 屬國軍으로 편성되어 있었다. 또한 이 외에 諸民族들로 구성된 糺軍이라는 군사 집단도 존재하고 있었다. 그런데 거란 태조는 발해와 전쟁을 벌일 때는 騎軍의 어장친군과 친위부대 알로타군을 주력으로 편성했을 것이고, 여기에 遙輦氏 규군도 이 전쟁에 참전했음이 확인된다. 다음으로 10세기 전반 발해와 거란 兩國의 군사력은 대략 3만 5천 정도의 차이를 보이고 있었다. 『遼史』와 『高麗史』 등을 바탕으로 당시 이들의 군사 규모를 분석해본 결과, 발해는 약 13만 5천 4백 명, 거란은 약 17만 1천 명 정도의 규모로 확인되었다. 이와 같은 수치는 당시 이들의 군사력이 크게 차이가 나지 않았음을 보여준다. 끝으로, 10세기 전반 발해와 거란 양국은 이처럼 체계적인 군사 편제를 바탕으로 군대를 조직하여 전쟁을 벌인 것이었다. 특히, 이들의 전쟁이 20년이 넘는 세월 동안 벌어졌던 것도 양국의 군사력이 비교적 대등했기 때문으로 생각된다.

영문 초록

In this article, we looked at the wars between Balhae and Khitan in the first half of the 10th century and tracked the military power of the two countries during the war. In the first half of the 10th century, Khitan invaded Balhae to advance into China and started a war that lasted for more than 20 years. The military organization of Balhae consisted of the central army guarding the capital and the local army deployed in the local administrative district. Therefore, Balhae fought a war with the Khitan in the first half of the 10th century based on such a military organization. And the Khitan army consisted of a central army, a tribal army, a local army, and an army from a subjugated state. In addition, there was a military group called the “Kyu army” composed of various ethnic groups. However, Great Progenitor Taejo of the Khitan would have organized an army mainly with mounted soldiers and the emperor’s escort units during the war against Balhae. It is also confirmed that the “Kyu army” here also participated in this war. Next, in the first half of the 10th century, the military power of Balhae and Khitan was about people 35,000 different. A close analysis of their military power at the time based on 『History Of Liao』 and 『History Of Goryeo』 confirmed that Balhae had about 135,400 people and Khitan had about 171,000 people. These figures show that their military power was not significantly different at the time. Finally, in the first half of the 10th century, the two countries of Balhae and Khitan organized an army based on such a systematic military organization and fought a war. In particular, the reason why their war broke out for more than 20 years is thought to be because the military power of the two countries was relatively equal.
