종교 갈등의 맥락에서 <쌀 나오는 바위> 설화의 이해

국문 초록

본고에서는 고대에서 중세로의 종교 전환의 국면에서 있었음직한 종교 갈등의 기억이 <쌀 나오는 바위>(이하 <쌀바위>) 설화에 간직되어 있다고 보고, 그와 같은 맥락에서 이 설화를 이해하고 나아가 전설의 갈래적 성취를 논의하고자 하였다. <쌀바위> 설화에서는 바위는 본래 신성했으나, 현재는 그 신성이 쇠퇴한 상태로 형상화되고 있다. 승려는 바위의 자리를 차지하고 바위가 제공하는 재화를 탐하는 존재로 형상화되고 있다. 이로써 바위가 선의 위치에, 승려가 악의 위치에 배치되어 있다고 볼 수 있다. 그런데 이 설화는 선이 권해지고 악이 징치되기 보다는, 선은 오히려 그 자취를 감추고 악은 악행을 징치 받지 않는 결말을 보여준다. 다만 증시부에서 바위가 증거물로 언급되고, 승려는 서사의 문면에서 드러나지 않는 것으로 볼 때, 언중의 평가는 바위에게 우호적임을 알 수 있다. 이를 불교 전래와 수용의 역사적 실제에 견주어 이해해보면, 바위로 표상된 재래 신앙이 점차 쇠퇴하여 승려로 표상된 불교가 이 재래 신앙의 자리를 차지하고 그 영역을 점차 흡수해 간 바에 대한 설화적 형상화라고 할 수 있다. 재래 신앙을 부정적으로 형상화하는 설화들과 <쌀바위> 설화를 견주어 볼 때, 불교적 존재가 승리한다는 서사적 전개를 공유하는 것으로 종교 전환의 역사적 실제를 서사적 왜곡 없이 드러낸다. 불교를 부정적으로 형상화하는 설화들과 <쌀바위> 설화를 견주어 볼 때, 선악 인물 형상의 배치를 공유하는 것으로 토착 신격에 관한 연민이라는 언중의 진의를 드러낸다. 이렇듯, <쌀바위> 설화는 불교로의 전환이라는 역사적 실제와 재래 신격에 대한 연민이라는 서사적 진실을 두루 담아낸다는 점에서 개성적 면모를 갖는다 하겠다. 이 설화가 제시하는 증거물인 바위가 재래 신앙이 쇠퇴한 역사적 실제를 증거하기도 하지만, 또한 언중의 관심이 귀착(歸着)되고 적층된 바를 보여주기도 하는 까닭이다.

영문 초록

In this study, we believe that the memory of religious conflicts during the religious transition from Ancient times to the Middle Ages is preserved in the story of the tale of , and we aim to understand the story in the context of religious conflicts and discuss the legend's genre achievements. In the tale of , the rock was originally sacred, but is now depicted in a state of decline. The monk is depicted as taking up residence in the rock and coveting the goods it offers. Thus, we can see that the rock is good and the monk is evil. However, rather than goodness being encouraged and evil punished, this story shows that goodness is discouraged, and evil is not punished for its misdeeds. The fact that the rock is mentioned as an evidence in the part that talks about evidence, and the monk is not in the text of the narrative, suggests that the narrative community's assessment is favorable to the rock. If we compare this to the historical reality of Buddhist adoption, we can see it as a narrative representation of the gradual decline of conventional beliefs, represented by the rock, as Buddhism, represented by the monk, takes its place and gradually absorbs the territory of conventional beliefs. Compared to tales that negatively characterize conventional beliefs, the tale of share a narrative arc of Buddhist victory, revealing historical reality without narrative distortion. Comparing the tale of to those that negatively characterize Buddhism, the shared placement of good and evil figureheads reveals the narrative community's compassion for indigenous deities. As such, the story of the tale of is unique in that it captures both the historical reality of the conversion to Buddhism and the narrative truth of compassion for the existing deity. This is why the rocks as evidence in this story testify to the historical reality of the decline of conventional beliefs, but also to the overlapping interests of the narrative community.
