<신과 함께> 웹툰과 영화에 반영된 뮈토스(mythos) 고찰

국문 초록

2010년부터 2012년까지 네이버 웹툰에서 연재된 주호민의 <신과 함께>는 사후세계에 관한 한국의 불교 및 무속 신화를 재해석한 사례를 보여주고 있다. 웹툰으로 큰 인기를 끌었으며 2017년과 2018년에 이를 각색하여 만들어진 영화 두 편 역시 대단한 흥행기록을 세웠다. 본 연구는 웹툰 중 ‘저승편’과 영화 중 1편인 ‘죄와 벌’을 비교하여 매체 전환을 통해 각 서사의 메시지가 어떻게 변했는지를 살펴보았다. 웹툰과 영화의 메시지를 다루기 위해서 고대 그리스의 개념인 ‘뮈토스(μῦθος)’를 현대 서양 연구를 반영하여 적용하였는데 이는 신화와 같은 개별 서사를 포함할 수 있는 가치관 혹은 세계관을 뜻하는 것이다. 먼저 웹툰을 보면 일반인들이 잘 알지 못하는 전통 신화의 소재들을 적극적으로 도입하는 한편 ‘萬人’ 혹은 ‘평범한 사람’을 주인공으로 삼고 저승을 현대화시킨 익숙한 모습으로 그림으로써 독자가 주인공 김자홍과 같은 처지에 처하게 된 것을 상상할 수 있도록 유도했다는 것을 알 수가 있었다. 이는 독자가 자연스레 역지사지의 입장을 취하며 자신이 지은 죄를 생각하여 반성할 기회를 제공했다고 할 수 있다. 또한 이승과 저승을 대비시키면서 이승에 대한 사회비판도 드러냈는데 특히 현대 사회가 얼마나 비합리적이며 착한 사람에게 살기 어려운 사회인지 보여주는 동시에 결국 한국 현대 사회에 만연한 ‘성공 뮈토스’에 대해 비판한 것으로 볼 수 있다. 반면 영화는 영웅적인 주인공을 소개하며 판타지나 사극에 어울리는 저승의 모습을 다채롭게 보여주었음을 논했다. 특히 각 지옥에서 죄인들이 벌을 받는 모습, 지옥과 지옥 사이를 통과하는 주인공과 차사들의 여정, 무서운 괴물이나 신령과 싸우는 장면이나 원귀를 쫓고 싸우는 장면 등에서 블록버스터 영화답게 엄청난 스펙터클을 선사하였다. 이는 관객의 몰입을 유도하는 장치로 훌륭히 기능하였으나 역지사지의 태도를 취하기가 어렵게 만든 요소로 작용했을 것으로 보았다. 그리고 영화의 최종적인 메시지인 ‘용서’와 ‘사랑’이 실제로 ‘현모양처’ 등과 같은 데에서 보이는 모성에 대한 현대적 뮈토스를 영속시키기도 하였음을 살폈다. 이는 의도적으로 그런 뮈토스를 표현했다기보다 감정이입을 극대화하면서 한국 사회에 아직도 은연중에 존재하는 뮈토스를 반영했다고 하겠다.

영문 초록

Ju Ho-min’s webtoon Along with the Gods (Singwa hamkke), serialized on Naver Webtoons from 2010 to 2012, reimagined Korea’s Buddhist and shamanic mythology regarding the afterlife. It achieved immense popularity and was adapted into two films in 2017 and 2018, both of which performed exceptionally well at the box office. This paper compares the first volume of the webtoon (the “Afterlife Volume”) with the first of these two films (subtitled “The Two Worlds”), examining how the message of the narrative changed in the process of media conversion. The concept of “mythos(μῦθος),” meaning an overriding set of values or worldview that may include individual myths, is borrowed to examine both the webtoon’s and the film’s messages. The webtoon makes active use of traditional myths with which general readers might not be familiar, and by taking an everyman as its protagonist and depicting the afterlife in a modernized, familiar way it encourages readers to imagine themselves in the same situation that protagonist Kim Ja-hong finds himself in. This gives readers the opportunity to put themselves in Ja-hong’s shoes and reflect on their own sins. In addition, comparisons drawn between this life and the afterlife express social criticism, demonstrating in particular how unreasonable modern society is and how difficult it is for someone to live a decent life. This is ultimately a criticism of the “success mythos” prevalent in modern Korean society. The film, on the other hand, introduces viewers to a heroic protagonist and depicts the afterlife in a variegated way suited to fantasy or historical drama. In particular, the punishment of sinners in the various hells, the journey undertaken between the hells by the protagonist and the Guardians, the scenes of fights with terrifying creatures or spirits, and the scenes depicting a Guardian chasing and fighting a vengeful spirit all present spectacles worthy of a blockbuster film. This spectacle may function to immerse the viewer in the film, but it also presents an obstacle to the viewer putting themselves in the protagonist’s shoes. In addition, the film’s final message of “forgiveness” and “love” perpetuates the modern mythos of motherhood seen in concepts such as “wise mother, good wife.” It is unlikely that this mythos was expressed intentionally; more likely, it simply shows that it still exists implicitly in Korean society, and it emerged as the filmmakers attempted to heighten viewer empathy for the characters.
