한국구비문학회 30년, 무가 연구의 성과와 과제

국문 초록

본 연구는 한국구비문학회 창립 30주을 맞이하여, ‘무가’ 분야의 연구 성과를 정리한 것이다. 무가는 ‘무속’의 한 부분이다. 따라서 무속 연구의 전반적 흐름 속에서 이해해야 하며, 그러한 흐름 속에서 구비문학회에서의 연구에 대한 경향, 특징, 성과 등을 이야기할 수 있다. 이런 관점에서 본 연구는 무속 연구의 흐름, 그리고 연구대상인 ‘무가’의 범위와 존재를 어떻게 인식했는지를 먼저 정리하였다. 한국의 무가연구는 1960년대부터이다. 대표적인 연구자가 서대석, 김태곤, 최길성 등이었다. 이중 서대석과 김태곤이 국문학자였다. 이들의 연구 경향은 명확이 구분되었다. 서대석은 무가를 '문학'으로서 자리매김하기 위한 노력을 했면, 김태곤은 무가를 포함한 무속 전반을 이해하고자 한 '민속'적 연구를 진행했다. 한국구비문학회는 서대석을 중심으로 창립된만큼 문학으로서의 '무가' 연구가 가장 중심된 연구 경향이었다. 반면 김태곤의 연구 경향은 민속학회 및 한국무속학회를 중심으로 이어지고 있다. 한국구비문학회의 학술지인 구비문학연구는 지금까지 726편의 논문이 발표되었고, 이중 무가 연구에 해당되는 것은 120여 편이다. 이들 연구들을 1) 서사무가 연구, 2) 구비서사로서 해외 서사물과의 비교연구, 3) 서사무가 외의 연구, 4) 무가를 매개로한 무속 연구, 5) 기타연구로 나누어서 정리하였다. 이 결과 구비문학회의 지난 30년가무가 분야 연구성과는 문학으로서 '무가' 연구를 강조하면서 민속학 연구와의 변별력을 강화해왔다. 학문의 정체성 측면에서 분명한 노선을 그어온 것이다. 그러나 그로인해 서사무가 연구로의 편중, 현장조사의 기반 없는 텍스트 분석 연구는 한계로 지적된다. 여기에 보태어 본 연구자는 앞으로 ‘무가’를 넘어선 ‘의례언어 그리고 표현(연행)’이라는 관점에서 연구를 확장하자고 제안하였다.

영문 초록

In celebration of the 30th anniversary of the founding of the Korean Oral Literature Society, this study summarizes the research results in the field of shamanic songs over the past period. Shamanic songs are a part of a whole called shamanism. Therefore, we must understand the shamanic research flow within the overall flow of shamanic research, and within that flow, we can discuss the trends, characteristics, and achievements of research in the oral literature society. From this perspective, this study first organized the flow of shamanic research and how the scope and existence of shamanism, the subject of research, were recognized. Korean shamanic research began in the 1960s. Representative researchers were Seo Dae-seok, Kim Tae-gon, and Choi Gil-seong. Among them, Seo Dae-seok and Kim Tae-gon were scholars of Korean literature. Their research trends were clearly distinguished. While Seo Dae-seok made efforts to establish shamanism as 'literature', Kim Tae-gon conducted 'folk' research to understand shamanism in general. As the Korean Oral Literature Society was founded around Seo Dae-seok, the study of 'shamanic songs' as literature was the most central research trend. On the other hand, Kim Tae-gon's research trend is centered around the Folklore Societies and 'Association for Korean ShamanisticStudies'. 『Oral Literature Studies』, the academic journal of the Korean Society of Oral Literature, has published 726 papers so far, of which about 120 are related to the study of shaman songs. These studies were divided into 1) Research on shamanistic Epics, 2) Comparative research with overseas narratives as oral narratives, 3) Research on shamanic songs other than shamanistic Epics, 4) Shamanic research using shamanic songs, and 5) Other research. They were organized. Consequently, the Oral Literature Society's research results in the field of martial arts over the past 30 years have emphasized the study of martial arts as literature and strengthened its differentiation from folk research. A clear line has been drawn in terms of academic identity. However, as a result, the focus on shamanistic Epics research and text analysis research without a basis for field research are pointed out as limitations. In addition to this, the researcher proposed to expand the research from the perspective of ritual language and expression (performance) beyond shamanic song.
