유교사상에서 중中 개념의 의미 차이에 따른 정의(義) 관념의 차이 고찰

국문 초록

본 논문은 유교사상의 핵심 개념 중 하나인 중中 개념의 의미를 분석하고 중 개념에 대한 이해의 차이에서 비롯될 수 있는 정의(義, Justice) 관념의 차이가 어떠할 수 있는가를 고찰하는 데 목적을 두었다. 이 주제는 다음의 세 가지 논점을 통해 검토되었다. 첫째, 중中 개념 자체가 내포하는 의미의 층위가 넓다는 점. 둘째, 문헌에서 중 용례는 일반적인 서술에서 철학적 서술에까지 넓은 범주를 갖기 때문에 철학 개념으로서의 중 용례에 대한 의미 구분이 필요하다는 점. 셋째, 중 개념의 이해 차이는 동양과 서양의 정의(義와 Justice) 관념의 차이와 어떠한 연속성을 가질 수 있는가 하는 점. 논의 결과, 《논어》와 《맹자》의 의 용례에서 의의 전제가 되는 중의 의미는 양팔저울이 아니라 과녁으로 상징되는 의미로 이해되어야 하는 것이었으며, 그것은 의와 이익의 중간을 확보하는 것(양팔저울형)이 아니라 의만 확보해야 하는 것(과녁형)이었다. 또한 이 의미에 앞서 이른바 윤리, 도덕, 정情의 표출 등과 같이 가치의 영역 혹은 수양의 영역에서 중은 과녁형의 의미로 이해되어야 하는 것이고, 의가 과녁형의 의미로 이해되어야 한다는 사실은 의가 추상적이고 이론적인 개념에 머무는 것이 아니라 현실성을 강하게 내포하고 있다는 점을 추론할 수 있겠다.

영문 초록

The purpose of this thesis is to analyze the meaning of the concept of Middle, one of the core concepts of Confucianism, and to examine what the difference in the notion of justice might be, which may arise from the difference in understanding of the concept of Middle. This topic was reviewed through the following three points. First, the meaning of the middle concept itself is broad. Second, since the concept of middle has been widely used from general descriptions to philosophical descriptions, it is necessary to distinguish the meaning of middle use as a philosophical concept. Third, the difference in understanding of the middle concept can have any continuity with the difference between the Eastern and Western notions of justice. As a result of the discussion, the meaning of middle, which is the premise of justice in the usage of classical literature, was to be understood as a meaning symbolized by a target, not a double-armed scale. It was not about securing a middle ground between righteousness and benefit (a double-armed scale type), but about securing only righteousness (a target type). Also, prior to this meaning, in the realm of values or discipline, such as ethics, morals, and expression of emotions, middle should be understood as the meaning of a target type. The fact that righteousness should be understood as a target type suggests that righteousness is not limited to an abstract and theoretical concept, but has a strong connotation of reality.
