국문 초록

본 연구는 영아기 첫 자녀를 둔 어머니들이 생애 처음 ‘엄마’가 되어 가는 과정에서 어떤 일들을 경험하며, 그리고 그것의 의미가 무엇인지를 그들의 생활 세계를 들여다보고 그 속에서 밝히는 것이다. 이를 위해 영아기 첫 자녀를 둔 어머니 6명을 연구참여자로 선정하였다. 자료수집은 2017년 6월부터 2018년 3월까지 총 12회의 면담 및 추가 면담을 실시하였다. 이외에도 연구자의 연구노트 및 SNS에 게재된 자료를 수집하고 이를 분석하였다. 연구결과, 우선, 연구참여자들은 임신과 출산과정을 거쳐 새로운 존재로 나타난 내 아이와 마주치고, 엄마가 되어버린 상황에 마주치면서 엄마라는 상황에 던져져 있음을 경험하였다. 그리고 아이로부터 얻게 되는 엄마라는 확신이 생기고 나의 한계를 넘어서는 엄마라는 역할과 책임을 느끼면서 스스로 엄마임을 자각하였다. 또한 새로운 과제가 끊임없이 부여되는 엄마의 역할과 주위에서 마주치는 다른 엄마들의 모습을 보면서 자기 나름대로의 엄마의 정체성을 확립해 나가고자 하였다. 그러한 과정 속에서 엄마들은 아이의 모든 것을 수용하는 주체가 되었으며, 엄마라는 존재는 아이와의 관계 속에서 끊임없이 변용되어 가는 생성적인 존재임이 드러났다.

영문 초록

This study examines life experiences and their significance that emerge in the process of becoming the a mother for the first time, by their life world. Accordingly, six first-time mothers were selected as study participants. Twelve interviews and additional interviews from June 2017 to March 2018 were conducted to collect data.. Additionally, data was collected from researchers notes and SNS and analyzed. Consequently, the mothers were confronted with my child who appeared as a new being through the process of pregnancy and childbirth, and they confronted with being a mother when confronted with the situation that they became a mother. The mothers became convinced that I was a mother that I got from a child, and they realized that I was a mother by feeling the role and responsibility of being a mother beyond my limit. Futhermore, the mothers tried to establish my own identity as a mother by observing the role of a mother who was constantly given new tasks and by observing the other mothers around her. Though such a process, the mothers accepted their children, and the mothers became productive beings, constantly transformed in their relationships with their child.
