국문 초록

똥은 더러움과 혐오의 상징이다. 그래서 사람들은 누군가를 비난할 때 ‘똥’과 관련된 표현을 사용하여 사람들을 공격한다. 심지어 똥은 콜레라와 같은 수인성 전염병을 일으키고 또 많은 세균과 질병의 원인으로서 제거되어야 할 악으로까지 타자화된다. 똥에 대한 이런 보편적 인식 위에서 본 논문은 똥과 관련한 성서적 용례를 탐색하고, ‘뒷간신학의 조감도’란 이름으로 똥에 대한 신학적 성찰을 시도하는데 이 연구의 목적이 있다. 연구 결과 본 논문은 다음과 같은 결론을 얻을 수 있었다. 우선, (1) 똥의 성서적 의미로서 두 가지가 드러났다. 첫째, 똥은 제사장의 정결법의 전통에 따라 부정한 것으로 간주되고 있었다. 그것은 차후에 쿰란공동체에서 더욱 강화되었다. 둘째, 예수는 표면적으로는 히브리 성서의 정결법을 전면적으로 부정하지는 않았으나, 더 큰 가치 곧 ‘하나님의 나라’라는 가치의 맥락에서 똥을 재해석하여 유대의 전통을 극복하고자 하였다. 특히 “열매 없는 무화과나무”(눅13:6-9)의 비유에서 나타나듯이 하나님의 나라를 위한 ‘거름’(κόπρια)이란 맥락에서 보는 것은 매우 독특하였다. 다음으로 (2) 똥과 화장실 문화에 대한 신학적 성찰로서 뒷간신학은 네 가지의 측면에서 살펴볼 수 있었다. 첫째, 똥은 생태신학적 관점에서 볼 때, 그것은 결코 부정한 것으로만 보아서는 안 되며, 오히려 하나님의 창조물로 이해되어야 한다. 그래서 똥의 구원이 필요하다. 둘째, 대화신학적 관점에서 볼 때, 똥에 대한 다양한 대화적 연구가 요망된다. 하지만 지금까지 신학의 분야에서 똥에 대한 연구는 매우 부족하였다. 따라서 뒷간신학의 발전을 위해서는 향후 똥과 관련한 문학과 심리학, 그리고 자연과학 등과의 적극적인 대화가 필요하다. 셋째, 똥은 비판신학적 관점에서 자본주의를 중심으로 한 현대 문명 및 현대의 교회 비판의 원리로 활용될 수 있다. 특히 똥의 이중성(더러움과 거름)은 그 비판의 토대가 된다. 넷째, 성례전적 영성학이란 측면에서 볼 때 똥은 비록 더러운 혐오의 대상이지만, ‘똥 속의 하늘’처럼 성례전적 존재로 이해될 수 있다.

영문 초록

Feces symbolizes dirtiness and disgust. Hence the reason why people use expressions related to ‘feces’ when they criticize other people. Furthermore, ‘feces’ is often regarded as an evil object which must be removed for its link to numerous infections and diseases such as cholera. This article, based on such perception, explores the biblical usage of feces and aims to reflect theological meaning of ‘dung’ or ‘toilet.’ First, this article points out that (1) feces in biblical context has two meanings. First meaning could be discovered from the tradition of priests’ law of purification which paints feces as a negative object. Such definition was strengthened later in the Qumran community. Second, however, Jesus did not entirely deny the Jewish purification law on the surface, but reinterpreted feces to overcome the tradition of Judaism and provide greater value in the context of ‘Kingdom of God.’ As shown in the analogy of “fruitless fig tree”(Lk13:6-9), it is greatly unique how feces is repainted as ‘manuer’ for ‘Kingdom of God.’ Next, this article (2) introduces four different perspectives of theology of toilet as a theological reflection of feces and toilet culture. First, in the perspective of ecological theology, feces should be understood as God’s creation rather than a mere negative figure. Therefore, salvation of feces is necessary. Second, in perspective of conversational theology, feces requires varieties of communicative research. However, studies on feces hardly been done in theological academia. Therefore, for the development of theology of toilet, active interactions and conversations regarding literature, psychology, and life science of feces are required. Third, feces could be utilized as a criticism for modern civilization and church under capitalism in the perspective of critical theology. Fourth, in the perspective of sacramental spirituality, feces is viewed as an object of disgust, but could also be understood as sacramental existence like “heaven inside dung.”
