한국불교의 스리랑카 비구니 승가복원과 그 이후 전개

국문 초록

기원전 3세기경 상가밋타 비구니에 의해 성립되고 발전되던 스리랑카 비구니 교단은 11세기경 남인도 촐라족의 침입과 기근 등으로 멸절되었다. 그 후 약 1천년이 지난 1996년 한국불교에 의해 다시 비구니계맥이 복원되었다. 이러한 역사적인 큰 업적을 한국불교가 이루어냈으나 불교내부의 문제로 이 중요한 행사에 대한 기본적인 기록이 거의 남아 있지 않다. 이 수계식의 존증아사리 등의 행적이 거의 밝혀져 있지 않아서 남방불교 비구니 계맥 문제를 연구하는 각국의 학자들이 몇 번 논자에게 문의를 해온 적이 있다. 이 분야에 한 두 편의 논문을 작성한 적은 있지만 논자도 그들이 질문하는 계단구성에 대한 파악이 잘 안되어 있어 대답을 못해주었던 일이 있었다. 그래서 수계식에 참여했던 원로스님들의 이력부터 찾아 기록하는 등 수계식의 기본적인 사항들을 기록하기 시작했다. 그 과정에서 수계식 당시 작성된 계단구성표를 구할 수 있게 되어, 그 표를 중심으로 이 논문을 작성할 수 있었다. 25년의 세월이 지난 지금이라도 스리랑카 비구니 계맥 복원을 위해 노력했던 숭고한 업적을 부족하나마 기록으로 남길 수 있어 다행이라는 생각이 든다.

영문 초록

The Sri Lankan Bhikuni Order, founded and developed by the Buddhist nuns of Saṅghmittā around the 3rd century BC, were annihilated by the famine and invasion of the Chola tribes of South India around the 11th century. About 1,000 years later, in 1996, the Sri Lankan ‘Bhikuni Dharma-lineage was restored’ by Korean Buddhism. Although Korean Buddhism has accomplished such great historical achievements, there are few basic records of this important event due to internal Buddhist issues. Since little is known about the history of this precept ceremony, such as witnessing acarya and others traces. Scholars from various countries studying the problem of the Bhikuni Dharma-lineage in Southern Buddhism have inquired of the author several times because I have written one or two papers in this field. But I could not answer the questions because I did not understand the Ceremony Construction they asked. So, I started to record the basics of the ceremony, such as finding and recording the history of the elder monks who participated in the ceremony. In the process, it was possible to obtain the Ceremony Construction table prepared at the time of the precept ceremony. Accordingly I was able to write this thesis based on that table. Even now, 25 years later, it is quite fortunate to be able to record the noble achievements of the Sri Lankan ‘Bhikuni in their efforts to restore the Dharma-lineage.
