『육조단경(六祖壇經)』과 36대법(對法)의 동용(動用) 연구

국문 초록

『육조단경(六祖壇經)』이 비록 문자와 언어로 표현되는 것이지만, 문자와 언어에 의지하는 한 근본자성에 결코 도달할 수 없음을 『단경』에서 분명히 밝히고 있는데, 이는 불입문자(不立文字)요 불구문자(不拘文字)로 대변된다. 그렇지만 『단경』이 한국 불교의 모태이며 한국 선의 기둥이라고 할지라도, 일상의 삶 속에서 우리가 문자와 언어에 의지할 수밖에 없다는 것은 주지의 사실이기도 하다. 논자는 이 문제에 대한 혜능(惠能)의 해결책이 대법(對法)이라고 보는데, 대법을 바라보는 몇 가지 오해가 해소될 때 그 의미가 더욱 분명해질 것이라 생각한다. 논자는 이러한 오해를 네 가지 의문으로 정리한 후, 이를 구체적으로 논증함으로써 대법의 실천적 의미를 구체화할 것이다. 첫째, “왜 36대법인가?” 둘째, “제시된 대(對) 이외의 대는 왜 제외되었는가?” 셋째, “어떻게 대법을 교수(敎授)할 것인가?”, 넷째, “어떻게 대법으로 중도(中道)의 뜻을 살릴 것인가?” 등이다. 첫째와 둘째 물음은 󰡔단경󰡕이 갖는 상징성과, 셋째와 넷째 물음은 대법의 실천성과 관련된다. 네 가지 의문을 해소하기 위한 논증의 실마리는 ‘성품을 동용(動用) 또는 기용(起用)하는 것’에서 찾을 수 있는데, 논자는 이것이 ‘자성을 일으켜 쓰는’ 전식(轉識)과 연결됨을 먼저 논증할 것이다. 그리고 이러한 동용 또는 기용은 혜능의 체용관으로 이해할 수 있는데, 이를 통해서 중도의 의미가 더욱 구체화될 것이다. 이로부터 대법은 양변을 떠나[不二] 중도를 이룩하는 법이고 자성을 동용하는 법이므로, 일상의 삶 속에서도 근본 종지를 잃지 않고서 선(禪)을 실천할 수 있는 법임이 정당화될 것이다.

영문 초록

Although The Platform Sutra of the Sixth Patriarch is also expressed by letters and spoken words, as far as relying on letters and spoken words we could not find the Essence of Mind, it is represented by the non-dependence on words and letters(不立文字 and 不拘文字). Even though The Platform Sutra of the Sixth Patriarch is the root of the korean buddhism and the foundation of korean zen, it is common knowledge that in our ordinary life we should rely on letters and spoken words. Noticing Huineng’s solution to this problem is the relative dharma, we think that the meaning is obvious when it is resolved by some misunderstandings on the relative dharma. After classified four questions for these misunderstandings, we will concretize the practical meaning of the relative dharma by addressing these ones in material way. First, “Why does it thirty six relative dharma?” Second, “Why other the relative dharma but the noticed one is rejected?” Third, “How could we teach to others the relative dharma?” Fourth, “How could we make lifelike the meaning of the middle way by using the relative dharma?” Both the first and the second questions is related to the symbolism and both third and fourth ones is related to the practice of the relative dharma in The Platform Sutra of the Sixth Patriarch. The clue of demonstration to resolve the four questions could be found ‘in the activities of the Essence of Mind’, firstly I address that it is related to the evolving consciousness(轉識) ‘as the process of thinking or reasoning’. And then these activities are revealed by Huineng’s Chaeyong view(體用觀), by these revealing the meaning of the middle way is concretized. From now on as the relative dharma is the way to gain the middle way apart from double sides(不二) and activating the Essence of Mind, it will be justified as the way which in ordinary life we could practice the zen without forgetting the fundamental core of buddhism.
