생멸의 과정과 배설, 감관의 수호: 똥에 관한 불교적 독해

국문 초록

불교 또한 똥을 더러운 것으로 전제하는 경우가 많다. 초기불교 수행법에서 상대 여성의 뱃속에 들어있는 똥을 상상하는 것으로 성욕을 억제할 수 있다거나, 선불교의 화두로 등장하는 ‘마른 똥막대기’처럼 필요하기는 하지만 더러워서 따로 보관해야 하는 대상이다. 화장실을 ‘근심을 푸는 곳’이라는 의미의 해우소(解憂所)라고 부르지만 그 관리소임은 기피 대상이었다. 그러나 다른 한편 초기불교 수행법인 사념처(四念處) 수행에서는 똥을 다른 관점에서 바라볼 수 있는 가능성이 열린다. 몸과 느낌, 마음, 진리 등 넷을 알아차림의 대상으로 삼는 이 수행에서 첫 번째는 몸이다. 몸에서 일어나는 일 중에서 똥을 누는 행위 또한 알아차림의 대상으로 삼아야 한다는 것이다. 이 과정을 감관(感官)의 수호로 이름붙일 수 있고, 우리는 무엇을 먹고 소화시켜 똥으로 내보내는 전 과정을 알아차림으로써 감관을 수호할 수 있게 된다. 이것이 가능해지면 똥 자체가 우리 자신을 물론 삶 자체와 분리될 수 없는 것임을 함께 알아차릴 수 있게 되고, 그것이 곧 문제해소의 출발점이기도 하다. 이러한 불교의 똥에 관한 인식은 근대 서구문명의 상징처럼 된 수세식 화장실로 인한 문제를 바라보고 해소방안을 모색하는 토대가 될 수 있다. 자신의 몸에서 나오는 것들을 그저 더럽과 불쾌한 것으로만 여기게 만드는 이 배설 문화는 지속가능하지 않고, 따라서 생멸(生滅)의 과정을 음식과 똥의 연결고리에 관한 인식을 연결지으며 적극적인 해결책을 모색해야만 그 지속성을 보장받을 수 있는 길도 열릴 수 있다.

영문 초록

Buddhism also often presupposes poop as dirty. It is necessary to suppress sexual desire by imagining the poop in the stomach of the other woman in the early Buddhist practice method, or to store it separately because it is dirty, although it is necessary like a “dry poop stick” that appears as a hot topic of Zen Buddhism. The bathroom is called Haewooso, which means “a place to relieve anxiety,” but the management office was avoided. However, on the other hand, the possibility of looking at poop from a different perspective is opened in the practice of the initial Buddhist practice, the Sasumcheo. The first is the body in this practice of making the four objects of recognition, including body, feeling, mind, and truth. Among what happens in the body, the act of lying on the poo should also be used as an object of recognition. This process can be named as the guardian of the superintendent, and we can protect the supervision by noticing the entire process of eating, digesting, and sending it out as poop. When this becomes possible, we can recognize together that poop itself cannot be separated from life itself, and that is also the starting point for solving the problem. This perception of Buddhism s poop can be the basis for looking at the problems caused by flush toilets, which have become symbols of modern Western civilization, and seeking solutions. This culture of excrement, which makes people regard what comes out of their bodies as just dirty and unpleasant, is not sustainable, so only by linking the process of life and death with awareness of the link between food and poop and seeking active solutions can the way to ensure its sustainability be opened.
