동아시아 한자문화권의 文字敎育一例 - 『삼자경』의 성립과 전개 -

국문 초록

수천 년에 걸쳐서 사용되고 있는 한자의 경우, 문자교육 텍스트의 역사는 그만큼 오래 되었고 종류도 다양하다. 여기서는 동아시아 한자문화권의 문자 교육 교재의 하나인 『三字經』을 중국의 다른 문자 교육 교재와 비교하면서 그 독자성을 밝히고자 한다. 특히 『삼자경』이 성립되고 전개되는 상황을 중심적으로 논의하여 한국에서의 기초한문 학습교재로 활용되기를 기대한다. 『삼자경』은 글자그대로 세 글자로 이루어진 책이다. 『삼자경』은 아동들에게 이 세상을 살아가는 데 필요한 기본적 지식을 세 글자로 가르친다는 취지를 담고 있다. 漢字 한 글자 한 글자에 담긴 위력을 충분히 살려 3字1句 안에 의미가 확연히 드러나게 편성된 책이다. 『삼자경』은 전체가 356句 1068字로 이루어진다. 사용된 한자는 중복된 것을 제외하면 512종인데, 지극히 일상적이고 용이한 한자를 사용하여 고도로 수준 높은 중국문화사를 농축하여 온전히 정리하였다. 내용은 크게 다섯 부분으로 나눌 수 있다. ‘학습의 필요성’을 강조하는 내용에서부터 우주와 세계를 이해하는 일반상식, 중국의 간략한 역사, 대표적 고전의 해설과 인간의 노력의 결실을 설명하는 등 광범위한 내용을 담고 있다. 중국 문화와 역사의 기초를 일 천여 자에 압축시켜 놓은 『삼자경』은 중국문화 입문서로서 주목하지 않을 수 없는 텍스트이다. 이에 『삼자경』을 발굴하여 한문교양 학습교재로 활용하는 것도 의의 있는 일이라고 생각한다. 『삼자경』은 일찍부터 일본에 전달되어 널리 사용되었다. 그러나 한국에서는 『천자문』에 밀려 그다지 확산되지는 않은 듯하다. 淸朝 雍正 5년(1727)에는 러시아어로 번역되었고, 이후 영국의 외교관이며 한학자였던 Herbert Giles(1845-1935)에 의해서 편역된 『San Tzu Ching(三字经)：Elementary Chinese』(1910)이 영어권의 『삼자경』 학습의 저본이 되었다. 동아시아 세계 전통적 초학교재를 연구하는 것은 단지 과거의 교재를 고찰하는 것이 아니다. 과거를 재평가하고 재해석함으로써 현재의 문제점을 직시하고 미래의 비전을 제시하기 위하여 살펴보는 것이다. 전통교육의 역사는 ‘전통’에 근거하여 현재를 다시보고 미래를 창조해가는 역사라고 말할 수 있다.

영문 초록

As for Chinese characters which have been used for more than a few thousands of years, enlightenment education textbooks have long history and their types are diverse. This study aimed to identify independence of 『Samjageyong』, one of enlightenment education textbooks in East Asia Cultural Sphere through comparison with different enlightenment textbooks. In particular, it focused on its publishment and development as it is expected that it would be used as a textbook for education of basic Chinese characters. The 『Samjagyeong』 is literally made of three characters. The power each character has was clearly shown in the three characters. The book is consisted of 356 phrases and 1068 letters. There are 512 kinds of the characters except repeated ones. They are easy characters that can be used in everyday life where Chinese cultural history were condensed and well-organized. The 『Samjagyeong』 has an intent of teaching basic knowledge needed in society to children only with three characters. The contents are roughly categorized into five parts: Emphasizing ‘necessity of education’, general common sense to understand the universe and the world, simple history of China, explanation of representative Chinese classics, and feelings of earning one s own education expenses. The book that condensed Chinese culture and basic history in about a thousand letters is an important text as an introduction to Chinese culture. noteworthy text. The 『Samjagyeong』 was delivered to Japan and Korea earlier. In the 5th reign year of Emperor Ongjeong (1727) in the Qing Dynasty, it was translated into diverse languages including Russian, English, and French. In Autumn of 1990, it was published in by the UN Education Department for the world people to read. It became part of world cultural heritages beyond East Asia. Therefore, this suggested that it is meaningful to use it as a textbook for education. Studying an elementary textbook of East Asia is beyond simple examination of textbooks that were used in the past. It is to reassess and reinterpret the past to a future vision. The history of traditional education is a process of creating the future based on a tradition that will continue to be renewed.
