국문 초록

오늘날 여가생활로 미술을 향유하려는 인구가 증가하면서 보다 다양한 형태로 미술을 경험할 수 있도록 하는 대안적 성격의 미술교육 프로그램 개발이 요구되고 있다. 이러한 필요에 따라 미술교육은 학교라는 테두리를 벗어나 박물관, 미술관, 문화센터, 작가 스튜디오 등과 같은 대체적인 장소를 통해 미술을 경험할 수 있는 교육의 기회를 확대하고 있다. 그 대상 또한 유아부터 성인까지 다양하게 확대되었다. 미술 인구의 증가와 더불어 현대미술의 흐름과 국제화 되어가는 사회적 변화 또한 미술교육의 내용적인 면에서 범위를 확장하고 다양화하려는 변화를 만들어내고 있다. 과거에 미술이 특정한 계층을 위한 제한적인 영역으로 여겨졌다면 현대에 와서는 미술의 원론적인 개념으로 돌아가 미술은 누구나 표현하고자 하는 본능에 따라 즐기는 일상속의 심미적 활동이기 때문에 미술교육에 있어서 형식을 강조하기보다 내용으로의 접근을 강조한다. 위와 같이 다양한 프로그램 개발의 필요성, 다문화 사회에 대한 대응책 마련, 현대미술의 흐름을 반영하는 미술교육에 대한 재구성이 논의되면서 하나의 방안으로 지역적 요소를 활용하는 지역 중심 미술교육이 제시되고 있다. 지역적 요소라함은 지역을 미술교육의 장으로 활용하는 한편, 지역의 특성에 따른 역사적, 문화적 가치를 미술교육의 커리큘럼 안으로 끌어들이는 것을 의미한다. 지역 내 존재하는 기관들을 적극적으로 활용하는 미술 프로그램 개발과 더불어 다문화 사회를 살아가기 위한 방법의 일환으로 개인을 넘어 지역 간의 이해를 높이기 위해 지역 내 역사적, 문화적 요소를 활용한 공공 프로젝트들도 만들어지고 있다.

영문 초록

The aim of this research is to examine the role of community-based arts education as an alternative means of providing a greater number of people with more opportunities to enjoy art as a part of their lives. For this purpose, a literature review was first carried out in order to understand the meaning of community-based arts education including its definition, forms, and impacts upon on that particular community. Subsequently, in attempt to examine the practical applications of community-based arts education more fully, a case study was conducted as an example of community-based arts education. The study focused on a local art center in a small town in Florida, which has been successfully managing the arts center in cooperation with community members. So as to gain a deeper understanding of the arts center and its operations, qualitative research method was adopted throughout the case study. Triangulation of data collection strategies including interviews, observations, and visual and written documentations was employed. The results indicate that the community-based art center offers members of community art-related educational opportunities that enrich their quality of life. More specifically, it serves six important community functions: a place to share experiences, a locale in which to hold art events, an alternative form of school where art can be studied, a gathering place, a symbol of the community, and a type of visitors' center. From these insights, this study concludes that community-based art center would take on the important role of serving as a gathering place for the community and of meeting at least certain of their aesthetic needs and interests through art.
