얼굴표정 모방을 활용한 공감 증진 프로그램 개발 및 효과*

국문 초록

본 연구에서는 얼굴표정의 모방을 활용한 공감 증진 프로그램을 개발하여 그 효과를 4세 유 아를 대상으로 살펴보았다. 공감 증진 프로그램 훈련에 참여한 유아들에게는 기쁨과 슬픔을 담은 이야기를 들려주고, 그 정서에 해당되는 표정을 보여준 후 유아에게 그 표정을 모방하 도록 하였다. 통제집단의 유아들에게는 동일한 이야기를 들려주고 이야기 나누기 활동에 참 여하도록 하였다. 프로그램을 실시하기 전에 Byrant의 아동 청소년용 BEI의 공감 측정 도구를 사용하여 이 두 집단유아들의 공감을 측정하였고, 프로그램을 실시한 후 동일한 도구를 사용 하여 공감을 재측정 하였다. 그 결과, 얼굴표정 모방 훈련프로그램에 참여한 유아들의 공감능 력이 이야기 나누기 활동에 참여한 통제집단 유아들의 공감능력보다 유의하게 증진되었다. 이러한 결과는 얼굴표정을 모방하도록 훈련하는 것이 공감을 증진시킬 수 있는 효과적인 방 법임을 보여준다. 또한 공감을 인지적 공감과 정서적 공감의 두 요소로 구분하여 프로그램의 증진 효과를 살펴보았을 때, 인지적 공감은 증진되었지만 정서적 공감은 그렇지 않았다. 이러 한 결과는 인지적 공감과 정서적 공감이 구별되는 별개의 체계일 가능성을 시사해 준다.

영문 초록

This study attempted to examine the effect of the facial expression imitation on empathy. We developed an empathy training program based on facial expression imitation and then investigated whether the program could enhance children’s empathy. Twenty-six children participated in the empathy training program with the facial expression imitation after listening to 32 stories, and twenty-four children participated in the discussion activities after listening to the same stories. Empathy was measured by the modified version of Bryant’s empathy index before the training session and then remeasured by the same index after finishing it. The result showed that children’s empathy in the facial expression imitation training group was significantly higher than that of those in the discussion activity group after the training session. In terms of cognitive and emotional empathy, cognitive empathy was facilitated by the facial expression imitation, while emotional empathy was not. This implies that facial expression imitation can enhance children’s empathy, especially cognitive empathy.
