국문 초록

이 연구는 중세 신비주의자 노리치의 줄리안의 신학적 사유와 여성 신앙인의 정체성 확립에 초점을 맞춘다. 초기에 교회 내에서 활발히 활동했던 여성 신앙인들은 시간이 지나면서 점차 교회의 가부장적 제약에 직면하게 되었다. 이에 따라 여성들은 자신들의 신앙을 정당화하고, 권위를 확보하기 위한 다양한 전략을 강구했다. 줄리안은 이 과정에서 자신의 몸을 신앙의 도구로 활용하며 신의 계시를 몸으로 체험하고자 했다. 그녀의 작품 『신성한 사랑의 계시』는 그리스도의 인성, 특히 그의 고통과 피흘림을 통해 여성의 몸과 신의 구원을 연결하고 있다. 줄리안은 특히 그리스도의 모성을 강조하며 이를 통해 중세 교회가 여성 신앙인에게 요구했던 희생적 순종을 재해석한다. 그녀는 단순히 감정적 신앙에 머무르지 않고, 감각적 체험을 통해 신의 뜻을 이해하고자 했으며, 이를 신학적으로 확장해 남성 중심의 교회 질서 속에서 여성 신학자의 위치를 정립했다. 줄리안의 사상은 전통적인 여성 신비주의자의 신앙을 넘어, 여성의 몸과 정체성을 구원의 통로로서 제시하는 독창성을 보여준다.

영문 초록

This study focuses on the theological reflections of the medieval mystic Julian of Norwich and the establishment of identity for female believers. Initially, women in the Church were active participants, but over time, they faced increasing patriarchal restrictions. To justify their faith and secure authority, female believers adopted various strategies. Julian, in particular, utilized her body as a means of faith, seeking to experience divine revelation through her physical form. Her work, Revelations of Divine Love, connects the humanity of Christ -especially His suffering and shedding of blood- with the female body and God’s salvation. Julian emphasizes Christ's motherhood, reinterpreting the sacrificial obedience traditionally expected of female believers by the medieval Church. She did not confine herself to an emotional faith; instead, she sought to understand God’s will through sensory experience, further expanding this into theological insights that positioned her as a female theologian within the male-dominated Church hierarchy. Julian’s thought transcends conventional female mysticism, showcasing a unique approach that presents the female body and identity as pathways to salvation.
