국문 초록

서하는 국가적 위기에 처했을 때, 북방의 강국인 요에 적극적으로 청혼하여 화친을 성사시켰다. 두 번째 혼인이었던 이원호와 흥평공주의 결혼은 결국 양국 간 전쟁이라는 부정적인 결과를 초래했지만, 이는 복합적인 요인이 작용한 결과였다. 반면 이계천과 이건순은 화친을 통해 국가 위기를 극복하는 데 성공했다. 이후 요가 멸망 직전에 이르렀을 때, 이건순은 요와의 의리를 버리고 금에 투항하였다. 그 결과 요·금 교체기에 남북방의 강국인 요와 송이 동시에 멸망했음에도 서하는 존속할 수 있었고, 오히려 영토를 확장하여 인종(仁宗) 시기에 전성기를 맞이했다. 결국 서하는 정치적 목적을 내포한 화친을 가장 효과적으로 활용한 국가였으며, 요 또한 공주를 파견하여 서하를 통해 송을 견제하려는 의도를 충분히 달성했다. 한편, 成安公主는 이전의 화친 공주들과 달리 아들을 낳아 태자로 책봉되면서 행복한 시기를 보냈다. 그러나 말년에는 고국의 멸망을 막아주지 않은 남편에 대한 서운함과 망국의 한, 그리고 아들을 잃은 슬픔 속에서 쓸쓸히 음식 섭취를 끊고 세상을 떠났다. 이처럼 정치적 목적이 담긴 화친의 희생양이 된 거란의 여인들이 끝내 고통과 슬픔 속에서 생을 마감했다는 비극적 사실을 기억해야 할 것이다.

영문 초록

When the Xi Xia(西夏) faced a national crisis, it proactively proposed marriage to the powerful northern state of Liao(遼), successfully forming a marital alliance. The second marriage, between Yi Won-ho(李元昊) and Princess Heungpyeong(興平公主), ultimately resulted in a war between the two nations—an undesirable outcome. However, this was the product of multiple, complex factors. In contrast, Li Jiqian (李繼遷) and Li Qianshun(李乾順) successfully overcame national crises through such marriage alliances. Later, on the eve of Liao’s collapse, Li Qianshun abandoned his loyalty to Liao and surrendered to Jin(金). As a result, even though both Liao and Song(宋)—the two major powers in the north and south—were destroyed during the transition period between Liao and Jin, Xi Xia survived. What is more, it expanded its territory and reached its zenith under Emperor Renzong(仁宗). In this way, Xi Xia became the state that most effectively used marriage alliances for political purposes; Liao, for its part, fully achieved its objective of dispatching a princess to Xi Xia in order to keep Song in check. Meanwhile, unlike previous princesses sent through marriage alliances, Princess Cheng’an(成安公主) gave birth to a son who was subsequently named crown prince, allowing her a time of happiness. Yet in her final days, harboring resentment toward her husband for failing to prevent her homeland’s downfall, and overcome with grief over the fall of her country and the loss of her son, she gradually stopped eating and passed away in sorrow. We must remember the tragic reality that Khitan women who became victims of politically motivated marriage alliances ultimately died in pain and sadness.
