교회를 떠난 청년 자녀를 둔 부모 경험에 대한 질적 연구

국문 초록

연구 목적 : 본 연구의 목적은 자녀를 신앙으로 양육하기 위해 노력해왔음에도 불구하고 청년이 되어 교회를 떠난 자녀를 둔 부모의 경험과 의미를 이해하기 위함이다. 연구 내용 및 방법 : 일탈적 사례 표집방법을 사용하여 기독교 대학의 교수이면서 사역자 혹은 장로이면서 자녀가 청년이 되어 교회를 떠난 연구참여자 두 명과 보조연구참여자 한 명을 심층면담하였다. 연구참여자들은 슬픔과 함께 끊임없는 자책과 반성을 하고 있었으나 시간이 지나면서 부모의 양육의 한계와 불확실성을 수용하고, 자녀들이 교회를 떠난 원인을 본인의 신앙전수의 실패만이 아니라 더 넓은 맥락(LGBTQ 문화와 정치적 양극화, 교회, 성인자녀의 신앙 선택 등)에서 볼 수 있게 되었다. 더 나아가 자녀의 교회이탈을 이해하고 의미를 부여하는 과정에서 부모는 신앙과 하나님에 대한 이해가 변화되고 불가지론의 영역이 확장되는 경험을 했다. 마지막으로 이들이 자녀의 신앙의 회복을 위해 취하고 있는 접근은 사랑의 관계유지, 기다림과 기도 그리고 조심스러운 대화였다. 결론 및 제언 : 교회를 떠난 청년자녀를 가진 부모 경험을 이해하고 지원하며 자녀의 신앙회복을 위한 그들의 노력을 돕는 신앙공동체의 역할, 간세대적 우애와 관계 형성이 있는 교회 문화, 부모가 가진 신앙과 신앙전수에 대한 문화적 가정에 대한 이해와 비판적 성찰, 신앙과 경건을 교육하는 데 있어서 대화의 중요성과 이를 연습하기 위한 개혁교회전통과 성경적 상담의 안내 활용 등을 제언하였다.

영문 초록

Purpose of Research : The purpose of this study is to understand the experiences and meanings of parents who endeavored to raise their children in faith, only to witness them leaving the church as young adults. Research Content and Method : Using the deviant case sampling method, this qualitative study conducted in-depth interviews with two primary participants—Christian university professors who also serve as ministers or elders—and one supplementary participant. Despite profound sadness, self-reproach, and continuous self-reflection, the participants gradually came to accept the limitations and uncertainties of their parenting efforts. Over time, they began to contextualize their children’s departure from the church beyond their perceived failure in faith transmission, considering broader factors such as LGBTQ culture, political polarization, church-related challenges, and adult children’s autonomy in faith decisions. Furthermore, as they sought to understand and assign meaning to their children’s disengagement from the church, the participants experienced a transformation in their understanding of faith and God, with an expanded acknowledgment of the agnostic dimensions of their beliefs. Lastly, the approaches these parents adopted to support the restoration of their children’s faith included maintaining loving relationships, practicing patience and prayer, and engaging in dialogue. Conclusions and Suggestions : The study underscores the need to understand and support parents of young adults who have left the church, and to assist them in their efforts to restore their children’s faith. It highlights the role of faith communities in providing such support, encourages critical reflection on cultural assumptions about faith and its transmission, and emphasizes the importance of fostering meaningful dialogue. Additionally, the study suggests utilizing resources from the Reformed Church tradition and biblical counseling to cultivate and practice dialogue that shed light on deep theological wisdom and pastor the heart.
