국문 초록

본 논문은 제1차 대각성 운동 시기의 조나단 에드워즈의 설교 방식을 분석하고, 감정 주도적이고 청중 중심적이며 결과 지향적인 접근법을 강조하는 현대 신설교학 (New Homiletic)과 대조한다. 에드워즈의 설교 방식에는 세 가지 설교학적 특성이 있다. 첫째, 그의 설교는 하나님과 그분의 주권에 중점을 두며, 긍극적으로 하나님의 영광을 드러내는 것을 목표로 삼았다. 신설교학의 감정 중심적 접근 방법과 달리, 에드워즈의 설교는 하나님의 높고 위대하심을 드러냄을 통해 청중들이 하나님과 그 분의 사역을 이해하고 경외하도록 도전했다. 둘째, 에드워즈의 그리스도 중심적 설교는 일관되게 그리스도를 구원의 중심으로 제시하며, 청중의 가장 깊은 필요를 해결하는 궁극적인 답으로 그리스도를 강조했다. 이러한 그리스도 중심의 설교학적 강조점은 청중의 경험을 우선시하는 신설교학의 경향과 대조된다. 마지막으로, 에드워즈는 성령의 조명하심 없이는 진정한 영적 변화가 불가능하다고 확신하며, 성령에 전적으로 의존하는 설교 방식을 취했다. 그는 청중의 마음이 변화되는 것을 설교의 열매로 이해했으며, 이러한 변화를 이끌어내는 힘은 오직 말씀과 함께 역사하시는 성령의 사역에서 비롯된다고 보았다. 이에 반해, 신설교학은 설교의 가치를 즉각적인 청중 반응과 현장에서의 청중 반응에 두는 경향이 있다. 결론적으로, 에드워즈의 설교 모델을 검토함으로써, 이 연구는 성령의 조명 아래, 하나님께서 행하신 위대한 일들을 설교하고, 그리스도를 높이며 찬양하는 설교 방식이 청중에게 지속적이고 진정한 변화를 이끌어낼 수 있는 길임을 확증한다.

영문 초록

This study examines Jonathan Edwards’s distinct preaching approach during the First Great Awakening and contrasts it with the modern New Homiletic emphasis on an emotion-driven, audience-focused, and outcome-oriented approach. This research highlights how Edwards’s homiletical principles offer an alternative lens for the New Homiletic, suggesting that true transformation in preaching derives not merely from audience engagement but from faithfully grounding sermons in Scripture, Christ’s redemptive work, and the Holy Spirit’s illuminating power. Edwards’s homiletical approach to preaching was marked by three distinctive attributes. First, he focused primarily on God’s sovereignty, underscoring that preaching should ultimately magnify God’s glory rather than begin by addressing man’s problems. Unlike the New Homiletic’s audience-centered methods, Edwards’s sermons began and ended with a high view of God, challenging listeners to understand and revere God and his work in Christ. Second, Edwards’s Christ-exalting orientation in sermons consistently presented Christ as the central figure in salvation, positioning Christ as the solution to humanity’s deepest needs. This emphasis on Christocentric preaching contrasts with the New Homiletic’s tendency to prioritize audience experience over theological depth. Lastly, Edwards’s reliance on the Holy Spirit highlights his homiletical convictoin that spiritual transformation occurs only through the Spirit’s illumination, ensuring the message resonates deeply in listeners’ hearts as seen in his sermon Sinners in the Hands of an Angry God. In examining Edwards’s homiletical model, this study offers a perspective on reorienting New Homiletic methods to embrace a preaching style that centers on God, exalts Christ, and depends on the Holy Spirit, suggesting a path for achieving lasting, authentic transformation in listeners.
