교회 정체성 정립의 기준: 칼빈의 비가시적 교회 개념을 중심으로

국문 초록

본 연구는 오늘날 한국교회가 마땅히 기억해야 할 교회의 정체성과 근본적 사명의 재고를 위해 16세기의 종교개혁자인 칼빈이 제시한 교회론을 재조명한다. 칼빈의 교회론은 중세 후기 변질된 로마 가톨릭 교회론을 비판하고 성경의 가르침에 충실한 교회를 회복하려 한 역사적 시도를 대표한다. 본 연구는 칼빈이 주장한 비가시적 교회 개념의 기원과 배경에 초점을 두고 이 개념이 보편적으로 가질 수 있는 현재적 의미를 규명한다. 이를 위해 먼저 칼빈의 교회론에 직접 영향을 준 초대교회 키프리아누스와 아우구스티누스의 교회론과, 종교개혁 시대 루터파와 개혁파 진영을 대표하는 신앙고백들에 나타난 교회론들을 살핀다. 그리고 칼빈의 교회론을 계승한 17세기 웨스트민스터 신앙고백의 교회론도 함께 검토한다. 칼빈이 생각한 비가시적 교회는 하나님께서 선택하신 사람들의 총수를 의미하는 초월적이며 영적인 실체이며, 가시적 교회는 같은 신앙을 고백하는 예배 공동체로서 그 안에 선택받은 신자들뿐 아니라 위선자들도 포함되어 있는 혼합된 공동체이다. 그는 가시적 교회와 비가시적 교회를 서로 구별되어야 하지만 분리되지 않는 두 실체로 이해했다. 칼빈은 이 이중적 교회 개념을 통해 가시적 교회가 현재 이 땅에서 비가시적 교회를 위해 수행하는 외적 사역의 신적 권위와 필수성을 강조했다. 또 비가시적 교회의 영적 원리를 가시적 교회의 현실을 진단하고 지속적인 개혁을 추진하는 기준으로 삼았다. 비가시적 교회의 영적인 원리들은 하나님께서 모든 신자들의 아버지로서 구원의 은혜를 주셨다는 점, 교회의 유일한 머리이신 그리스도의 절대적 통치권에 따라 교회의 제도와 직제가 실행되어야 한다는 점, 그리고 하나님께서 주시는 신자들 사이의 사랑의 결합을 통해 교회의 일치와 참된 교제가 유지된다는 점이다.

영문 초록

This study examines the ecclesiology of John Calvin in order to reconsider the identity and fundamental mission of the church that the Korean church today should remember. This study focuses on the origin and background of Calvin’s concept of the invisible church. To this end, this study first examines the ecclesiology of Cyprian and Augustine in the early church, and the ecclesiology in the representative confessions of the Lutheran and Reformed camps during the Reformation. The ecclesiology of the Westminster Confession of Faith, which inherited Calvin’s ecclesiology, is also investigated. According to Calvin, the invisible church is a transcendent and spiritual entity that consists of the total number of people elected by God. On the other hand, the visible church is a worshiping community that professes the same faith, and a mixed community that includes not only the elected believers but also the reprobate hypocrites. He understood the visible church and the invisible church as two entities that should be distinguished from each other but are not separate. Through this dual church concept, Calvin emphasized the divine authority and necessity of the external ministry that the visible church. In addition, he presented the spiritual principles of the invisible church as a standard for diagnosing the reality of the visible church and promoting continuous reform. In Calvin’s ecclesiology, the spiritual principles of the invisible church are that God has given the grace of salvation as the Father of all believers, that the system and order of the church must be implemented according to the absolute sovereignty of Christ, the only head of the church, and that the fellowship and unity of the church can be maintained through the union of love from God.
