국문 초록

존 칼빈은 자타가 공인한 설교자로서의 자기 인식을 가장 중요하게 여겼음에도 불구하고, 신학자로서의 칼빈에 대한 연구에 비해서 설교자와 그의 설교에 대한 연구는 비교적 부족한 것이 사실이다. 이 논문은 칼빈의 43편의 갈라디아서 설교문에 대한 해석학적 설교학적 분석을 통한 개혁주의 설교에 대한 함의와 제안을 제시하는 논문이다. 이를 위해서 이 논문은 먼저 칼빈의 설교와 그가 구현한 설교적 요소들에 대한 다양한 학자들의 일반적인 평가들을 종합적으로 살펴본다. 특별히 칼빈의 갈라디아서 설교문들을 분석하기 위한 구체적인 분석의 잣대로 현대 성경적 설교의 필수적인 잣대인 저자의 의도성과 청중 맥락화를 통해서 분석 평가를 하고 있다. 이를 위해 현대 강해 설교학자들의 저자의 의도성과 청중 맥락화에 대한 개괄적 설명과 더불어, 이에 대한 칼빈의 이해와 살펴보았다. 구체적으로 이 논문은 칼빈의 43편의 각각의 설교문을 저자 의도성과 맥락화의 관점에서 분석한 결과로, 그의 설교는 비록 그 형태적인 면에서 현대적 강해 설교와의 차이를 보이지만, 성경 저자의 의도를 충실히 반영한 설교이자, 본문의 진리를 당시 제네바 회중의 삶을 향한 진리로 적합하게 맥락화하여 경고와 격려가 담긴 구체적인 적용을 실천한 점을 확인하였다. 이런 칼빈의 갈라디아서 설교가 보여주는 특징들, 즉 하나님의 말씀으로서의 성경 본문에 담긴 저자의 의도에 대한 충실성, 정경적 맥락과 선명한 교리적 확증이 담긴 설교, 그리고 저자의 의도성에 기반한 적법한 맥락화의 균형, 그리고 이 모든 것을 통한 목회지향성의 열정 등은 개혁주의 설교가 지향해야 할 중요한 함의들을 제시하고 있다.

영문 초록

Despite John Calvin’s self-perception as preacher, studies of Calvin as a preacher and his sermons are relatively scarce compared to those of Calvin as a theologian. This paper analyzes Calvin’s 43 sermons on the book of Galatians and presents implications for Reformed preaching. To do so, the paper first synthesizes the general assessments of various scholars on Calvin’s preaching and the sermonic elements. Specifically, the analysis of Calvin’s Galatians sermons is evaluated through the lens of authorial intention and audience contextualization, which are essential criteria for contemporary biblical preaching. To this end, the paper provides an overview of comtemproary homiletics scholars' accounts of authorial intent and contextualization, as well as Calvin’s understandings of these concepts. Most of all, this paper analyzes each of Calvin’s 43 sermons in terms of of authorial intention and contextualization, and finds that they are sermons that faithfully reflect the intentions of the biblical author, appropriately contextualize the truth of the text for the life of the Geneva congregation, offering specific applications of warning and encouragement. The characteristics of Calvin’s sermon on Galatians-fidelity to the author’s intent in the biblical text as the Word of God, preaching with canonical context and clear doctrinal affirmation, a balance of legitimate contextualization based on the author’s intent, and a pastorally oriented passion through it all-provides important implications for Reformed preaching.
